FYI, for those researching a trip, here is a fresh copy of the taxi price list to go to various locations on Samui from the pier. As you can see, you need a wad of baht to get to most locations.

However, you can save a bundle by just grabbing a seat in one of the waiting songthaeo's instead (for those new to Thailand, they're the covered pickup trucks with two rows of seats in back), usually found parked off to the left as you exit the pier walkway. Then rent a motorbike to tool around your chosen area.

Example of savings:

To Lamai:

Taxi: 600B

Songthaeo: 35B !

Travel smart. Don't get overcharged...

pure madness, these guys need to be done in, not only do they over charge, they take all the parking spaces in chewang and behave as if you owe the something if you take a spot they reserve for themselves. one reason i do not carry a gun for fear i would use it on them.

I have to admit that the motorcycle taxi dudes "reserving" spots along the road in Chaweng is vexing. No one owns the parking along the road.

Oh, and this, "Taxi Meter Association of Nathon" ... uh, yeah, right. Perhaps you have heard of the "Wolfe Foundation for Negative Gender Research"? Or the "Bottled Beer Assessment Association of Lamai"?

This is a pie in the sky list created from nothing so that when people complain of being ripped off, the drivers can point to the sign: "See? It's right there in black and white!"

And if there is an association of taxi drivers who use their meters, it must be a group of about 3 or 4.

Yes, the taxis here are run by the mafia and before anyone disagrees with that let me point out that running taxis legally requires licensing AND adhering to requirements which include actually using a meter and the rates the taxis can charge...here, Samui, is lawless and mafia runs everything. Do NOT ride taxis here and do NOT put yourself in a situation that gives the mafia a chance to extort you...because they WILL

It was a full songthaeo pretty much the whole way from the pier, so if my memory serves me correctly that is what I paid. But I could be wrong. It certainly wasn't 60B, tho.

But upon returning to the pier from the same location, there were NO other passengers on board yet (it was early), so I had to negotiate a price of 80B. Still VERY reasonable compared to a metered taxi.

Chaweng and Lamai were both nice. Relatively uncrowded, few touts.

Please stop using the word mafia to describe these morons. The mafia are in Italy, not in Thailand.
