Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday declined to clarify who is really in charge at the Royal Thai Police Office following the early return from leave of police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwon.

Mr Abhisit earlier approved Pol Gen Patcharawat's request for leave to visit China from Aug 5 to 14. He said the police chief would return briefly on Aug 11-12 for the celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen's birthday.

But Pol Gen Patcharawat returned earlier than expected on Saturday. On Monday morning, he went to his office at police headquarters and sent a circular, dated Aug 9, to all deputy and assistant police chiefs and police commissioners advising that he had returned to work. continued postlogo.jpg

... reminds me on something... staged in 2006 ... by someone who

has turned fugitive by now "I step down, I lay down politics, I quit!" but never did -

seems to be a common thing to do in certain circles.

Really amazing all this... TiT at it's finest!

Patcharawat informs PM of his return

Writer: BangkokPost.com

Published: 10/08/2009 at 02:43 PM National police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan has informed Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of his early return from leave and resumption of duty, according to a letter he sent to the prime minister through his deputy Suthep Thaugsuban.

Pol Gen Patcharawat said in his letter, dated Aug 9, that he decided to return from China earlier than Aug 14 on hearing a warning that a tropical storm would soon hit the mainland. Moreover, he was duty-bound to have an audience with Her Majesty the Queen on Aug 11, the eve of her birthday, along with other high-ranking officials.

In the letter, the prime minister was also informed that the police chief had resumed his duty at the Royal Thai Police Office.

Could it be that his early return has something to do with averting a problem involving his deputy? It seems his deputy would normally become acting chief in the bosses absence but this was not the case this time around and another was selected. It seems that the deputy was not happy at this and threatened all manner of complaints and procedures. But given that the deputy is the brother of Thaksin's (ex) wife, I can understand why he was not chosen on this occasion!
