Hello!

Family of four here heading to Phuket for a year, maybe more if it suits us well. We are hoping if we can get some advice on the safest areas to live, affordable housing and schools, etc...Hubby is a veteran, so being near a VFW or other veterans a plus, but safety and affordability number one on the list. Don't want to spend more than $20,000 baht on a 2 or 3 bdr home...unreasonable, or fair? All suggestions, tips, advice, etc...greatly appreciated and heard!! Thanks!

How old are your children, and how many will be attending school?  This could well be your biggest expense.  As far as rent goes, you should be able to find something decent for your budget, but it won't be with a private pool nor an ocean view.

Thai schools are generally unacceptable but several good international schools in Phuket. No VFW but plenty of hanging out locales, particularly in the southern part, between Wat Chalong and the southern tip. Disreputable hangouts abound in Patong and other places. 20k baht/month can get you very nice 3-BR, some with pool. Food costs less than USA, eating out and movies far less.

We have a 9 yr old and a 15 year old. We have and can homeschool again if need be, but I would definitely prefer school for socialization. Sounds like Chalong area is a good family section? Def would like to prefer to avoid disreputable areas.

Thanks so much for the advice! We will be heading that way Feb 2010, and already taking notes and learning all I can!
