I live here now and have both a car and motor bike Thai Driver's Lincese. I am going out of the country and want to get a Thai International License. Does someone know where one has this done? The only office I know that does this is in Bangkok. Surely there are other offices, aren't there? And what kind of paperwork must a farang bring to get one. Many thanks for any info!

Do you want an International Drivers License issued in Thailand?

Buying or Renting a Car or MotorbikeGuest writes "For those with a Thai Drivers License, and needing an International Drivers License -

An International Drivers License, in English, can be issued in Thailand.

1. It is not a valid drivers license in Thailand, and

2. It is only good for one year from the date of issue

The details and process are as follows;

The charge for the International drivers license is 500 baht.

The documents you must have in hand when you apply -

1. The original and at least one copy of your current valid Thai car and motorbike licenses

2. Your passport and copies of it and your visa information

3. A Residence Certificate - obtainable only at an Immigration office, where they will require proof of your residence - the title to your home, a copy of your lease, or a copy of your rental agreement plus the property ownership information.

4. Passport size photos (2)

You must apply in person.

The place to apply is - the Vehicle Registration Division of the Department of Land Transport, which is located in Bangkok at Building #4, 2nd floor, 1032 Soi Pawatyothm. Ladpow, Chattuchak, Bangkok 10900.

The phone number for the Land Transport Office office is 02-272-3618. It is suggested that you call in advance to double check the location and requirements for the License, and the days and hours of operation when the license may be issued.

Directions - The Pattaya Bus from the northern bus terminal will take you to Bangkok, where you should exit the bus at the "On Nut" BTS overhead train. Take the BTS to Mo Chit and exit. Take a taxi or motorbike to the Land Transport Office. It is about 10 minute from the Chattuchak Weekend Market.

The process - Present your documents at the information desk for verification, and complete the application for the International Drivers License. Go to the directed window and leave your documents in the in-box. Your name will be called in about 30 minutes.

Pay the 500 baht fee and receive your license.

If you are currently in Pattaya, the latest edition of Pattaya Trader (free at farang-oriented supermarkets) has an article on one of the recent expat club meetings (not sure which one). I was falling asleep with boredom reading it, but I'm fairly sure that a Thai lady, who is boss of the Land Transport Office in Rayong and was giving a speech, said that you can get an IDP in Chonburi. Sorry, I've got no more details, get that Pattaya Trader if you want more...

Mostly the Expat info is correct. However exit the Sky train at Saphan Kwai [sic]. The Land Transport Offices are then a 4 minute walk. You can also get a bus to Mo Chit bus station then take taxi to Chatujak Land Transport Offices [Khon Som]. Driver will know and cost 60 Baht.

The photos have to be passport size and NOT Thai driving license size. Those taken at photo shops are usually too glossy and are rejected [the ink stamp put over the top rubs off]. Better to have photos taken at the offices [ground floor].

Must be done in person with 5 year license NOT 1 year.

The Chonburi offices are geared up to issue these International Licenses but have not started doing so just yet. Bangkok is the only place to go.

Not true at all..

They take postal applications and the provincial offices will do all the forms and check everything and send off on your behalf..

I have had a couple and never gone to bangkok to get them, just along to my local DMV, did the forms and it came in the post a few weeks later.

I went this week to the Land Transport and was in and out with my IDP in 10 minutes. The only change is that the charge is 505 Baht, a 5 Baht increase. I took the MRT to Chatuchak Station and Exit 4 is marked "Land Transport Office." Couldn't be easier, except for finding Building 4!

Many thanks for the info!

Is it required to have the 5 year driving license to get the international one?

I only have my one year license and would like to go driving in Japan next Spring. Way before I can get my 5 year license.

Also I suppose it's possible to get the international one only for motorcycle. I have only motorcycle license in Thailand.

Has anyone tried to get the IDP from the google banner ad on this page and every page when ever IDP's are mentioned?

Beware of the difference between an IDL (scam) and and IDP (legal).

Cheap IDL's can be purchased online, and are handy for waving at 3rd world cops, or keeping in a wallet so they can be lost etc, but they are not the legal solution.
