Am in the process of getting a new US Passport, and was wondering if there is a Thai Immigration rule on how quickly I have to get the retirement visa and "permitted to stay" stamp transferred to the new passport. My yearly renewal is coming up next month and am hoping I can do it all in one day. Might be easier just to take two trips for those two purposes however.

This is only my opinion:

I think you should be OK to do everything next month at the same time. Just make sure you carry both (old and new) PPs with you in case of an inspection at a road checkpoint etc.

Make sure you obtain a letter from your embassy saying they issued you a new passport. This is needed by Thai immigration. Not sure if you are on extension of stay (because you mention yearly renewal) or whether you have a visa (you mention retirement visa, which does not exist, but maybe you mean "O" or "O-A" visa). Immigration will not transfer a visa, if that is what you have. You would have to use your old passport until the visa runs out. Immigration will transfer extension of stay, permission to stay and any re-entry permit to new passport and note any current visa details.

In Chiang Mai can not answser but for Bangkok it would not work as the transfer process takes most of the day as it is leave in box and return in afternoon to obtain.

Does it really take an entire day just to get the info into a new PP these days?

The last time I did it (2001) it took about 15 min. in an upstairs room at Suan Plu.

Looks like their centralized system has made everything slower as far as service is concerned.

Let's hope things will be better after the move.

The new system is drop it in the 30 day return passport box of room 101 before noon and present yourself between 14-1500 to receive. At least that was the process in May this year.
