Snake: Fast Visit

Featured Replies

Got a visit in the garden this afternoon, too quick for me to take any picture.

From the description of everyone, looks like a Rat Snake (Indo-Chinese or Oriental).

Length: about 2 m

Color: Black

Characteristic: Move Fast and Away from Human. Seems to like hiding in one hole in the garden.

This is the 5th type of snake we see in the garden.

Thanks for that good site for info on snakes. Wish i had known about before i bought my book on snakes last week.

Here is another great site specific to Thailand many links and close pictures, venom toxicity/danger to humans and ferocity (or not) of the various species (worth knowing when snakes are taken by surprise which are likely to run and which are more likely to attack.

Again another thanks for the additional web site

I don't know much about snakes found in South East Asian and it is good to know or learn about the ones that are potentially dangerous and the ones that are benificial for rodent or pest control.

The problem for people not used to snakes is recognition (which are safe/safe-ish and which are not). A few seem fairly obvious but others have variations of colour and would/could fool most not snake experts.

So for me, a UK man not used to snakes, ALL snakes are assumed to be potentially very dangerous and to be avoided at all costs (safety first). I think Thailand has around 87 varieties :)

One about an arms length my wife tells me has appeared today in our garden next to our raised pond and water fall. Two sightings. Wish those seeing it would watch long enough to see where it goes. Our garden has a 2metre wall on all 2 sides with only easy entrance being a 5 metre wide gate. My concern is those that find their way in will not find their way out very easily. I have a 6 yr old son son (hyper) who runs around everywhere and a wife who adores the garden and gardening. She is increasingly coming across the odd small snake. Killed one in a lawn mower and never knew it until later. My concern is she sees the babies as too small to be of worry and gardens well into dusk and I cannot seem to get through to her that she takes a lot of unnecessary extra risks. Gardening in half dark cutting long perimeter grass crouching with garden shears (the way she has most often found a snake) is stupid. I bought a standing up to use long arm trimmer shears for 800 Baht to help protect her from coming across a snake at very close quarter but old habits seem to die very hard.
