Embarassment At The Grocery Store

While I hate to side with the poster known as "phetaroi" on any issue (just as they are most likely not thrilled either :) ).

dam_n! You just ruined my day. :D Now leave me alone...I wanna go listen to a Perry Como CD.

Was it necessary to slip in your unfounded Yank bash anyway?

My thoughts also.

Okay guys...calm down. I am a yank!

Americans who join in the yank bashing to show how PC they are, are the worst. There are plenty of jerks like that of every nationality (except maybe the Dutch). Be more careful about what you say! :)

This afternoon I was shopping at the Emporium's grocery store. I got up to the cashier to check-out and there was a farang raising all sorts of hel_l because the customer service counter isn't a check-out counter. The geezer looked like some kind of over-the-hill hiker and I expected at anytime he would break out in a chorus of "The Happy Wanderer", which would have been a great improvement. He went on and on about the inconvenience for over 5 minutes. No one else even stood in line that long! I give credit to the Thai personnel. When they saw he wasn't going to let up, they silently ignored him as if they couldn't understand a word of English, although they did check him out at a check-out counter...silently...while looking straight ahead.

Although I couldn't quite determine if he was American, I was embarrassed that a Westerner would act that way. Who gives a dam_n if they check him out at the service counter where he is from? I hope he chokes on the food he was buying. Yanqui go home!

The OP's post could have just as easily have been written by a Thai person reflecting on his/her compatriots behavior. So before slamming the non-locals... ask yourself, "Have the locals ever done something that embarrassed another local?" Answer: Of course!

There was an article on one of the news sites describing how a local pistol whipped a bartender. His "crime" was not mixing the drink to the customers satisfaction. The offending customer did pay for his drink... I guess he did not want to have theft against him along with the assault charge. Can you imagine the number of posts vilifying the customer if he had been from overseas? Whew, I bet the thaivisa server would have crashed and burned from the number of postings. :)

Have a nice day!

What is wrong with you yanks today? So sensitive :)

I guess what OP means in his original comments was along the lines that he would have been even more embarrassed if the guy was fellow american. Sure i would in OP's situation...

AS for your bigotries on "Yanqui" YOU CAN SHOVE IT WHERE THE MOON DOES NOT SHINE!! As for the arshole he is a disgrace on all farangs.

You don't need to copy all the OP and there is no need to shout, but most of all don't take it personal, it is not country specific, I have met them from all walks of life, including my own steps, allegedly of course.

I am and always will be proud to be an American BUT, sometimes I'm embarrassed to be a foreigner :) .

Insert any nationality here, but I agree with the poster known as tod-daniels, which grieves me no end :D

Wow some Janqui bashing.. I love thai visa always fun to read.

Im Dutch and we almost never get bashed.. either because we are perfect.. or there are too few of us to be noticed.

I do believe that types like that give us all (farang) a bad reputation, it should not but it does. Too bad we can't do anything about it.

None of those. Its just that almost everyone likes dykes.

Even if he was a Yank (which I seriously doubt it)... maybe he just had a bad hair day and from my own experience going thru the real check out counters in most shops and supermarkets here in Thailand can be a real pain in the arse experience - so maybe next time you should just MYOB - one thing for sure there is no short of <deleted> in this world.

Use the search function on the forum for GOM, you should be able to find it. It was a classic thread.

Tried that but only got a couple of nods towards it. Not the actual thread. :D

Before you open it I hope you have a lot of time, a comfy chair and a takeaway nearby. It's a long read.

:):D:D

Well worth it tho!

Thanks Dan

1. In this particular store (or any that are similar here, from what I've seen), there is no hassle. I've never experienced more than a 3 minute wait. The items are unloaded from my basket for me. The girl asks if I have an M-card. I say no, not yet. She scans the items. I pay. My order is packed well and off I go.

2. So, since I don't agree with your post, based on your own principles, I should tell you to just MYOB. because there is no short[age] of <deleted> in this world?

Couldn't have been American. There are no customer service counters at American grocery stores. Was it necessary to slip in your unfounded Yank bash anyway?

Most the larger grocery stores in the States have counters labeled "customer service." Whether customers can actually receive service at those counters is another issue, and a tangent, of course.

Those counters usually are equipped to "check-out" customers, though few US customers use them for that (often they handle cigarette purchases, returns & exchanges, and other misc. transactions).

So your point stands, despite my correction, since few Americans would expect/demand check-out service at the customer service counter.

I guess I need to clarify a bit further the purpose of my OP.

Those of us who are westerners and yanks...and that includes me...are affected by the behavior of all westerners/yanks. Maybe that's not the way it should be, but it's human nature to lump people together into groups. My point was that I wish other westerners/yanks would consider the example they are setting and how their behavior is often generalized to all.

Incidentally, as to the subject in question -- wore some kind of gloves with the fingers cut off.

Yachties wear gloves like that, but they're the coolest guys on the planet ! In my experience they are always well behaved, can hold their booze and being well travelled, learn to respect the locals. Reckon this guy stole the gloves after he got kicked off a boat as a trial crew !

Bigotries? Hardly.

I thought it was a very funny comment.

Hit a sore spot, hmmm? :)

Now, since I am bored, I will re-read as much I can take of the GOM thread.

Don't get me wrong, it was a funny comment. Even funnier when written right after the same comment regarding yanks...

Reminded me of a good old Austin Powers movie where gold member states "i can not tolerate people that are intolerant against other peoples culture, and the freaking dutch!" or something to that nature :D

Not sure about everywhere in the US, but all the larger grocery stores in my experience have had customer service counters where overflow customers are sometimes rung out. Usually doubles as a Western Union and lottery ticket sales point too.

I think the "non compos mentis" diagnosis is most apt from the behavior described, but it's certainly possible for him to have had a memory of being rung out at a customer service counter back home. Considering his approach, he may have been shuttled to quite a few of them just to get him out of the store.

You are correct - Walmart has a Customer Service Center -where you also can pay / Publix, Albertson have a Lotto-Cigarette Counter where you also can pay your grocery as well and you can pass the cashier line for this. Very common in the USA.

BUT - regardless of nationality, it does NOT MATTER ABOUT THE CULTURE OF YOUR HOME COUNTRY, you are here in Thailand and have to get used to the local customs - if you do not like it, look for another country to live. Tschuess :)

Speaking of Walmart, did you see that tip of geriatrickid in another thread about People of Walmart?

There are some pics of people at these service counters.

Highly recommended. :)
