British Nhs Question

Unless he has continued to make voluntary UK National Insurance contributions while living in Thailand, his NHS entitlement is dead at the moment. If he returns to the UK, it will take him some time to re establish his entitlement. So, if he was hoping to step off the plane and get instant NHS care for free, sorry, not possible. (Unless of course he made those voluntary contributions...)

Nonsense.

Yes and no.

In theory it's right, in practice well my own experience appears to be the norm.

Its sad that honest taxpayers with docked pensions should have to lie to be be treated as advised

The real problem will come when the flood of foreigners causes theUK to join most of Eurofacism with ID cards

Fortunately Jacqui 2 homes Smith too busy claiming for her husbands porno movies to get the legislation through this yeat but its on the horizon.

Seriously your pal should see a local DR also as long haul flying is not ideal for those with respiratory problems in any class and good treatment is available at top hospitals here at a price.

There is also the issue of recuperation.For those who have not been an NHS in patient recently things have changed.They try to zoom you out of expensive beds asap and if you have no home lodging and food is many times more than here and nursing care very expensive.

Good luck and get well soon

So after paying ludicrous amounts to the government for years, I am now demoted to a lower status than an asylum seeker??

Just reminds me why I left the sh1thole of a country.

Here, here....absolute f..ing joke! Paid god knows how much in income tax and god knows what else for 20+ years and now entitled to 'diddly squat'! The UK is a joke!

So you paid tax until age 36+ and now expect the people who stayed in England to keep funding the NHS for another 30 years for you when your Paradise tells you to <deleted> off when you ask for free healthcare in old age.

Pay for you own private healthcare and dont rely on others.

PS You had free usage of the NHS for 36+ years, i doubt youve covered paying for your childhood years when you didnt work.

I should imagine his parents paid when he was young ,or doesnt that count,i have paid in for 46 years and i also am reduced to less than an Asylum seeker ,but i still have a doctor in the U.K. we have paid in we are entitled and you sir i take it still live in the U.K but come here on your holidays for sex and sun as a two week millionaire ,just jelous of us who live here i guess.

That's the position I'm in and what makes it worse, is that I'm still paying UK income tax!!!!

In the Uk, what does basic emergency treatment cover? If a foreigner has a disease that would be terminal without long term and expensive treatment, would they be denied?

It is extremely unlikely that they would be denied treatment, but they could be presented with a bill afterwards!

From Are you visiting the United Kingdom?

How do I know if I have to pay?The law says that the hospital providing treatment must decide if each patient is entitled to free NHS hospital treatment. The hospital will ask you to provide evidence to confirm your eligibility.

What do I have to pay for?

You will have to pay the full cost of all the treatment you receive, including emergency treatment, given by staff at a hospital or by staff employed by a hospital. However, there are some services that are free of charge to everyone:

  • Treatment given only in an Accident and Emergency (A&E) department or in a NHS Walk-in Centre providing services similar to those of an A&E department (excludes emergency treatment given elsewhere in the hospital);
  • Treatment for certain infectious diseases (excluding HIV/AIDS where it is only the first diagnosis and connected counselling sessions that are free to everyone);
  • Compulsory psychiatric treatment;
  • Family planning services.

Anything else may be charged for.

Further down the page linked to is a long list of exempted persons.

See also Eligibility for free hospital treatment under the NHS, from which comes

What about British Nationals? I have paid taxes in the past.

Nationality or past or present payments of UK taxes and National Insurance contributions are not taken into consideration when establishing residence. The only thing relevant is whether you ordinarily live in the UK.

RubbaJohnny, Jacqui Smith resigned as Home Secretary in June.
