Hi

I have a 5 year old male pug and he's started to have seizures that I believe to be epilepsy

these seizures are happening about 1 every 4 weeks, what I need to know is, whats the best

treatment to try and prevent these seizures becoming more regular, I know there is no cure for

epilepsy but I would like to give him the best quality of life possible even with his epilepsy.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

you have to identify first what triggers the seizures. There can be many causes: toxicology, tumours, scarring tissue on the brain, parasites.... Once identified then the treatment can be considered. If it is idiopathic epilepsy (true epilepsy), anticonvulsant can be tried: takes a long time to get the dosage and frequency of administration right. And most of the time it won;t control the seizures 100%. Not an easy disease to manage: takes also a lot of dedication and observations.

Sometimes your dog can have seizures and you won't witness them. Only to come home and find a mess when your dog is housebroken. Or just a bit dazed look. Sometimes there can also be triggering factors like sirens or loud noises or flickering lights... Check also if there is any family history in your dog's line.

Good luck
