Last evening I returned from Chiang Mai:

- Travellators not working, had to walk nearly one kilometer to exit doors. Many passengers volunteered to help carry bags and/or children to help several Thai ladies with youngsters and numerous bags.

- Taxi scam artists openly operarting just outside of customs area harrassing passengers.

- Went to outside concourse area at exit door 2.

- Old furntiure / old signs everywhere, looks awful.

- Eventually found three small AOT counters. Multiple electricity extensions cords and extension boxes all over the area, completely lacking in any attemps to make the place look professional or even clean. How is it that there is nobody on the airport staff who is responsible to check / ensure theese things are done correctly and professionally and in a way which looks OK?

- Dispute going on because taxi driver wants more money: he is loudly and angrily demanding that his passengers will have to pay three hundred baht more for luggage (100 X 3 for three pieces of luggage - one medium size suitcase and two small backpacks - (the 2 farang passengers and their luggage already in his car - farang passengers have no idea what's going on). There is a policeman and an AOT official on the spot, their opinion is that it's up to the driver, he can do whatever he wants. Very vocal Thai female passenger (not connected to 2 farang) goes to the car and encourages them to get out and take another taxi, which they do. Taxi driver now goes into serious anger mode and is eventaully told by the policeman to move on.

- About 40 passengers now in the line and no vehicles. Vocal Thai lady asks why, because at the next taxi point (outside exit door 3) there is a continuous stream of taxis arriving.

- She is told that somebody near the entrance to the airport is warning taxi drivers that there is a policeman and an AOT official at exit 2, so don't stop your taxi there, go to the other exit points.

- We hand back the slip we have been given and start to walk towards the line at exit 3. Policeman says we cannot do that.

- We go back inside the building and then walk out at door 3.

- 15 minutes later in the taxi, meter running.

Is there any hope?

You "walked nearly one kilometer" in a building that is only marginally over 500 meters long on any single level?

I exited domestic arrivals straight out the 2nd door, got a yellow ticket, went about 30' down the sidewalk, handed in my ticket, got a white one and a driver, got in the cab, drove me to top-end of Sukhumvit for 300 baht in about 25 minutes start to finish.

What airport were you using again?

U don't need any travelators and the AOT desks are bright yellow for limo services and blue ones for information. Read the signage and you won't get lost next time.

In the domestic terminal, it's just under 500 metres from the last gate to the main hall. And there are NO travelators at all going out, only going in. Then it's another fair walk to get to baggage and the exit. Although there are some travelators once you get to that area, altogether, it is indeed nearly 1km to the taxi area if you start from the last domestic gate.

Just to follow up. The above is exactly the reason why I prefer domestic flights at Don Muang.

- approximately 100-200 metres from the aircraft to the taxi area, where there is a plentiful supply, usually with no queue at all

- from deplaning to sitting in the taxi, total time is about five minutes

OK, listen up!

Arrived at Gate B6 on time and was through the baggage claim area in about 8 minutes from them opening the door on the plane (on-time AirAsia arrival at 09:40). No checked bags so 'FOLLOWED THE SIGNS' to Public Taxis which meant ONE travelator to the ground floor. Row of 6 desks for taxi tickets but real quiet (almost 10am) so got the yellow ticket, exhanged for white ticket and on my way in a taxi with freezing airconditioning... bonus! Was dropped at the Brit Emb at 10:25 for 305 baht (meter + 50 baht surcharge; I paid the two toll fees).

No hassles, no rip-offs, no farang haters... it was so refreshing AND REALLY HAPPENED!

So that's TWO REAL GOOD taxi experiences at Suvarnabhumi in less than 3 weeks. Why does the OP have ONE bad trip and doll it up so that it looks like ALL airport/taxi experiences are bad?
