Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone knows of any big bikes for rent in Koh Samui? We are planning to ride from the mainland near Samui over to Krabi and we arn't to keen on doing it on scooters. I have Considered taking a bus but apparently it is only 3 hours ride and would be a great adventure if we had the right bikes. I just need to know from anyone that has been there if there are some bigger ones on offer maybe around the beaches or in town? Im looking for something around 400cc or bigger. Definately not a trail bike. If not we will hafto rent a car and it would not be anywhere near as much fun.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

That would be OHM motorcycles. Some members might have more details about the type of bikes they have.

You can Google them , they have a site.

Boater have you been at the medication again ? :D

Riding a big bike in Thailand is not dangerous if youhave experience of big bikes. Just because you have a big bike does not immediately equate to high speed. My last big ride was 2,300cc. It spent most of its time around 100-110kph. he difference was it had torque and was a dam_n site more comfortable than a small bike. I have ridden all around this beautiful country and felt safer riding a bike here thanI ever did riding back in the UK :D Here car / truck drivers are more aware of bikers as there are so many.

Crewin, don't listen to all the " ride a bike in Thailand and you will die " losers and go for it. It is the only way to travel in Thailand for me. You get the smells the sights and you can stop when you feel like it. Just stick to the number 1 rule. NEVER BE IN A HURRY TO GET ANYWHERE! That and wear a lid and you will enjoy the ride to Krabi. A really nice run! :)

Ohm is the man to see on Samui. he has all types of bikes from sports bikes to tourers to big HD's PM me for his details or more info. :D

Agreed that Ohm Cycles is the place to rent. He has Harleys, super fast bikes and trail bikes.. Check out his Ducati's. Don't listen to advice from old men on Clicks who are talking out of their catalytic converters... Go for it and have a great time. :)

Thanks Rooo, thats exactly what I am after! I tried to google choppers in Koh Samui and couldnt find anything specific, just references that there are some for hire but no website and especially no name.

Thanks to the rest of you fella's for the encouragement, We have done some touring on 400cc honda's in the Mae Hong Son, So We will be fine with open highway. I just wasnt going to do it on a dam_n 100 cc scooter.

Cheers all!

HL :)

With cars, the rental company if it's a small one, will give a sticker on the car.Large CO's are OK, you can go wherever you like.

Bikes, I think the same applies, you need permission.

I think Larry has a good point here. Your biggest stumbling block is being allowed to take the bike off the island. If this is the case, why not rent a bike in Krabbi and do the trip down to Phuket. Thats a great ride. Oh, and please wear a helmet :)

the bulk of the roads is wide and split hwy, how these condition make for a bike being more sport, and a better way than a car, i dont see it.

I think you'll find most bike hire shops will not allow the bikes to leave the island. This was certainly true of Ohm three years ago, and I'll be surprised if their policy has changed. Not too sure whether a Ducati would make a good road bike for Thailand either, personally I'd go for a Kawasaki.

Met a guy on his way back to Phuket, via ferry, on a new R1. The bike looked as though it had suffered. I finally passed him on a straight, semi-unsurfaced road doing about 50kph. Can guarantee he was having more fun than myself in a car, but he would have enjoyed himself a lot more in the dry on some twisty roads.

Whatever you decide, enjoy yourself. I've also travelled back and forth to Malaysia and up to Bangkok with no problems apart from a pair of jeans that looked as though I'd buried them on the beach for a week

Ohm doesn't usually let rented bikes leave the island unless he knows you well or are driving with a group who he knows.

most of the big bikes don't have proper number plates so you won't be able to take them of the island, however Ohm does have some new fully road legal kawasaki bikes ninja 250 and er6n 650 which you should be able to take of the island.

I can second that one... Ohm has the most trusted bikes on the Island - great guy and reliable.... Keeping in mind what screamingeeagle posted - on island, no problem for rental, off island - different ball game... Unless he knows you very well or driving with a group he knows...

Good luck and enjoy - miss being down south!

Predadores MC are riding to BKK on the 10th Dec to meet up with all our brothers, Bandidos and other Support Clubs, and then we all ride to Chang Mai for the 12th. Should be a great bash!!!! :D Had a beer or 10 with Crispin last nite.

dont hire the big bike, it is too dangerous, and road in samui are not good for such bike. instead, yhou can hire the bicycle, come out for me with day trip and i will show you the sigts and sounds of samui without the throbbing engine between your legs. trust me if it far better experience to be free on bicycle than on big bike. you are not cool by hiring a big bike,. it just seems as though you have a small *&&* pepe. to have a big bike.

Not another lycra clad tree hugger who thinks wobbling around the ring road loking like a village people reject is safer than riding around Samui with the power to get you out of trouble if needed. :D It is not the size of the bike but the person riding it that makes it dangerous. Having worked a lot in London the Lance Armstrong wannanbes I've come across have no respect for taffic law and see themselves as owning the road.

Also the OP wants to ride to Krabi if I'm not wrong :D are you suggesting he does this on a cycle :D

Plus I would lke to see anybody ride up the hill to where I stay on a bike, mountain or otherwise ? :)

I'm not saying there are not some nice cycling tracks around Samui but as a method of transport, not pleasure, they leave a great deal to be desired.

Oh and welcome to TV :D
