A quarter century ago, across the street parallel to MaeNam Sai at Thailand's northernmost point, there was a cheap guesthouse with small rooms up a cliffside which I suspect had no plumbing. The "owner" called himself Cobra Joe and once introduced me to his 5 wives: one each, Lawa, Lahu, Akha, Hmong and Karen (maybe, I don't clearly recall). Joe offered guide service for motorcycle excursions outside Tachilek, and as I understand it, never returned from an exploration to the west of town, an area to which Wa people were being resettled. It would interest me, if anyone could add details about this
