Shock sacking: Darren Ferguson

Darren Ferguson has been sensationally sacked by Peterborough United, despite leading the club to consecutive promotions.

Peterborough declined to comment on Monday night, but the 37-year-old was relieved of his duties after a meeting with director of football Barry Fry and chief executive officer Bob Symms.

The son of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had forged himself a strong reputation after leading the club up from League Two and seemingly striking up a good relationship with ambitious chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

However, the side have struggled to hold their own in the Championship, winning just two of their opening 16 fixtures, with Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at top-of-the-table Newcastle sending them bottom of the table.

Afterwards, Ferguson said: ‘We are bottom and we don’t like it, but I know what I have in that dressing room and it’s plenty of spirit and commitment.

‘We have 30 games to put things right, which is a lot of time.’

That time ran out quicker than anticipated. Ferguson signed a new four-year contract in the summer after being linked with moves to Reading, West Brom and QPR. There were rumours he was desperate to bring in another striker ahead of his next match with Sheffield United on November 21. He had won 73 of his 145 games, suffering just 40 defeats.

Ferguson has also been linked with Hull City, where Phil Brown remains under pressure, but last night sources close to the former Wolves midfielder said he had no other job lined up.

Peterborough may now look to an experienced replacement such as Peter Taylor or Steve Coppell.

I have to be honset was surprised by this considering what he has acheived at Peterborough over a short period of time. Hehas done a great job, and then he finds himself out of a job. We all know it's a results based game, but this guy has taken the club to two consecutive promotions and deserved a little more time on this. As for replacements, Peter Taylor is an excellent lower league manager, but not done much in the top 2 leagues, and Steve Coppell seems to have lost his desire for football. I think Coppell is more likely to manage Pattya United next year.

Brilliant topic heading, Mr Toad! :):D

I couldn't resist - I'm sure Mr BJ will be creaming himself when he sees the heading. :D

Yep,pretty shocking.I know they are struggling in the Championship,at the moment, but you would think after back to back promotions they would be happy with survival this season, plus the fact the season is only about one third through so you would hardly think panic stations just yet !

I reckon he will get a job at a bigger club in the not too distant future but I dont mean Liverpool or Citeh ! :)

This was another "mutual" sacking wasn't it Toadie ? He'll probably end up at Direby after they've had a "mutual" sacking of their own :)

Is that the place with all the trophies? You should stop by and get your picture taken while there, you are not a young man mate. :D

I forgot, trophies aren't important at Manchester City United. How's the weather by the way, frightful I imagine?

I think he will take his old man's job when Alex retires. In the meantime a Championship club would be a good gig. I think the premiership is a step to high for him at the moment. No doubt about his ability as a manager, but family conflicts may play a part.

Exactly, when (not if) he takes over for Brown at Hull, he won't be able to be on the touch line when he plays us. :)
