You have to be at least 50 years old on the day of application. The 800,000 Baht has to be in the bank for 2 months before applying. It can be in any bank and you do need a bank letter.

Must be 50 at time of application. 800k in Thai bank for 2 months for first application, 3 months for subsequent applications. Can use any Thai bank, but SCB, Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn have good online banking facilities.

You will need a letter from bank confirming the account balance (to agree with passbook), together with completed application form TM7, recent passport sized photo, copy of bank passbook and copy of passport. A map to you residence might be asked for together with some proof such as rent receipt/lease but that should be all. Fee 1,900 baht. If you plan to travel during the period of the extension you will need to obtain a re-entry permit from immigration to keep your permission to stay alive. Fee 1000 baht single entry; 3800 baht multi entry.

I believe it has to be any Thai bank.

I'm curious. My account in HSBC does not have a passbook. For my first time I had my monthly statements to date, the current statement, and the letter.

Latest monthly statement plus up to date bank computer printout plus bank letter usually suffice if don't hold passbook account (but most people do).

Certainly there is nothing in the written law requiring a passbook. Certainly it will be expected if you have an account that uses a passbook. The decision whether you have provided enough proof or not is always up to the discretion of your officer. Therefore I recommend kowtowing ...

I'd be interested in knowing if you can get a Thai baht account anywhere other than in a Thai bank?

According to the Thais, you would already be 50 ("in your 50th year on earth")

Would that fly with Immigration?

My bank back home can provide THB currency accounts

But is that acceptable at Immigration for various visas?
