I thought married mans allowance has been scrapped?

Try checking the finance forum there's posts on there about pensions.

I believe it finishes in April 2010!

Try the UK Pension site!

The ruling is that any NEW claims for the "married man's allowance" will not be processed after April 2010.

In April 2020, however the whole system gets scrapped for anyone claiming for a Thai wife, new or old claims (amongst other nationalities too, of course)

What happens to a Thai widow of a British National is something i dont know about

I'm coming up to pension age. Can anyone give info. regarding married mans allowance for my Thai wife?

If your 65th birthday is prior to 5th April 2010 then you can claim Adult Dependency Increase for your wife, this will cease on 5th April 2020 , if however if your 65th birthday is after 5th April 2010 then you cannot claim the allowance. Also note depending on your wife's date of birth the retirement age for woman is being brought into line with men that is to say raised to 65 in increments i.e

The State Pension age for women born on or after 6 April 1950 will increase gradually to 65 between 2010 and 2020.

And of course that is also changing vis:

Between 2024 and 2046 the State Pension age will increase for both men and women. This increase will be gradual, happening over two years every decade. The changes will mean that:

State Pension age for men and women will increase from 65 to 66 between April 2024 and April 2026

State Pension age for men and women will increase from 66 to 67 between April 2034 and April 2036

State Pension age for men and women will increase from 67 to 68 between April 2044 and April 2046

I am attempting to claim the dependents benefit for my wife.

I wrote to the department in Newcastle in June after phoning them to be sure of what they required which was our marriage certificate and both mine and my wife's birth certificates. All must be originals. I also sent a scanned copy of my wife's birth certificate as well.

After a short while they sent all 3 back and when I rang them in July they said that they required my wife's original birth certificate for translation I pointed out that they had recived it once but I sent it off again by EMS.

They did return her birth certificate

That was in July and they said it will take between 10 to 12 weeks.

I rang again in September and it was "in progress".

October "still in progress".

Late October " Oh we sent it to the department for the National Insurance people in September and it should be back in 6 to 8 weeks".

Early November " Sorry it isn't back yet and we will send you a letter to let you know when the benefit will be paid".

Last Friday " Sorry nothing from the NI people yet but we will let you know when you will be paid".

The good news is that it will be backdated to the date of my pension back in May.

The possible downside is that the exchange rate may not be as good when it finally comes.

My best advice is to keep chasing them once a month and don't hold your breath while you wait. :)

Unfortunately I like a lot of other people live in Thailand and are subject to the vagaries of the UK civil service.

Granted they are polite and helpful but there are 2 different departments involved with different agendas and timescales and this is where the problem lies.

I will call them again in about a week and then once more before Christmas and post the results here.

3 weeks ago i sent off my wifes nat ins no ,her id card and our marriage cert ,just recieved them back at our u.k address. with letter saying its in progress

I finally got my allowance at the beginning of December so I assumed that my wife has a NI number. :D

I called them last week and said yes she has but we cannot tell you over the phone what it is.

Please write to us and we will send the details.

Silly me, I would have thought that issuing the number they would automatically have sent the details to my wife where we live. :)

Guess I thought wrong. :D

What is this 2k payment? The only payment I know of a possible 2k is for the funeral - conditions being that you reside in the UK, are claiming UK benefits and have the funeral in the UK

You can hardly blame the government really - 60 year olds going to Pattaya, getting married, dying and the lady getting 30,000 baht a month for 70 years. :)

Not so. Almost all of us are UK residents, staying in Thailand on Visa/Visa extensions. A Thai wife is entitled to claim.

I have just been involved in helping to get this payment for a Thai widow who's husband died here.
