Hi there, myself (british) and my wife (thai) are moving from the UK back to thailand soon. Initially I thought, get my son's british passport here, then when we fly just have him added to his mothers so that he'll be flying on a thai passport and not have to have all that hassle with visas and stuff (he's only two months old, so I don't think he'll fancy visa runs).

Anyway, there was a change in 1998 so that children can't be on their mother's passport so I definitely have to get one of his own.

How do I get a thai passport for him? Just the thai embassy? Is it difficult? Also, where do we stand on him having dual nationality and passports for both so that he has a right to stay in either country?

Thanks for any helps guys.

You use the UK birth certificate to make a Thai version at the Embassy and then they can issue a Thai passport. You want to do it while you are in the UK. Then he and mother enter using there Thai passports. Dual nationality is not a problem. He should also have UK passport. If laws do not change when due for military service he will be subject to service as a Thai but that I expect is far in the future (I suspect) and rules may not be the same.

thanks guys, that's a great help. Will i have to get an official translation of his birth certificate (into thai)? Or seeing as we are in the UK is that not required (meaning will the thai embassy london accept that, register the birth and allow me to apply for his thai passport)?

Believe the embassy in London will accept the untranslated birthcertificate. But information should be on their webiste.

As said, you will have to apply both for the passport. Forms are on the website, both of you need to sign. The Thai birth certificate will list the name in Thai, so prepare a good translation of the English name, that includes your own name as the father.

I just got my almost two year old son a Thai passport in Bangkok.

Very easy except getting him to sit still for the photo.

For all to go smoothly you need the Thai parent's ID card and house card. Plus passport of the non Thai parent.

Did you need to show the childs Thai or foreign birth certificate? Or was he listed on your wifes house registration?

You can only apply for a Thai passport if you have a Thai birth certificate. If the children were born abroad, you first must register the birth and get a Thai birt certificate from the Thai embassy for that country before you can apply for a Thai passport. For applying for a Thai passport in Thailand, you need to be on someones household registration. When applying for a Thai passport at an embassy, you don't need to be on a household registration.
