New Living Will Law In Los

Featured Replies

There was a recent discussion on the new living will law here in LOS and I have done a search on both this sub forum as well as the general sub forum and came up with no results.

I need to know if a living will drawn up in the US will be acceptable here?? or should I see an attourney here and is it a standard form..........or does it have to be drawn up by the attourney??

Th law is still in draft form and details not yet worked out but should certainly be in the Thai language and notarized in Thailand. which as I understand it, one has to go to a lawyer for but the cost should be small. If the person making the will is a foreign national, also a good idea to get it notarized at your Embassy.

These types of documents have been recognized in the US for sometime but in my experience don't count for all that much, far more important is to have a health care power of attorney i.e. a document which appoints someone you trust to make health care decisions on your behalf. Best to have that document notarized as well.

Both a living will (AKA advance directive) and health care POA are advisable but of the two it is the second that is in practice most effective. Reason being that dead people can't sue or otherwise make a fuss but the living can, so doctors and hospitals are far more responsive to the expressed wishes of someone holding a power of attorney than they are of a document signed by someone who will shortly die.

Just to play it safe. I got mine done in Thai and English and had it notarized by a Thai and US notary. It clearly stipulates in both languages if I am unresponsive on my bar stool at Soi Cowboy for more than 20 minutes it's fine to pull the plug.
