Just need some first hand information on this before I actually do it.

I have applied to the British Embassy for a new passport as I don't have enough pages in my old passport for visas etc.

My non "B" visa expires on the 25th of February so I plan to leave Thailand on that date with my old passport and re-enter the same day in order to get a 15 day stamp at a land border with my new passport.

Now I know a lot of you out there are going to tell me that my old passport, once the corner is cut off, is no longer valid. That is true for any travel not concerning Thailand but I have been told that the visa in my old passport is valid right up to the date it expires. So I can legally walk out on the old one and come back in on the new one.

My question is will the immigration give me hassle about the new passport as it will not have any other stamp in it apart from the 15 day visa waiver period received at the land border.

I do not need to go to immigration with the new one for a visa tranfer as the visa runs out on the same day as I cross the border.

cheers

You were told wrong. That passport is invalid and can not be used for entry or exit. Only the new passport can be used and the information from old passport (not the visa as they are never moved - the entry stamp) needs to be entered into the new passport. This should be done in Bangkok at the time you pick up the new passport. There is a form to fill out and copies to be submitted. There is no charge.

Not true as the passport is repeat is still valid if doing this on the last day of the visa validity and no need to transfer any stamps as there is nothing to transfer as the visa is dead on that day, as I have been told by immigration.

Anyway the original question was not that. The question was about a bare passport with a 15 day stamp????????

As already said, you need to go to immigration and get your current permission to stay stamp in your old passport transferred to your new passport. Your current visa will not be transferred (as not issued by immigration) but details will be recorded in your new passport, even though visa will expire shortly. Standard procedure. You cannot leave the country with your permission to stay in an expired/cancelled passport.

The corner was cut off, making the passport invalid. You can no longer use it as an ID or travel on it. When you have a valid visa in the old passport, you can still use the visa, (provided that page is still completely intact and not damaged). But any permission to stay will be entered in your new passport and you need immigration to transfer the details of your visa and current permission to stay to the new passport.

You should not wait until the 25th of February. You should go to the immigration office as soon as you got your passport to transfer the Stamp which tells you when you have to leave the country into you new passport.

Most of the Farangs in Thailand are thinking the Visa is important for stay in Thailand. Which is not really true. Important is what the Officer at the airport stamps into your passport and this stamp you always shuld carry with you no matter what.

So let me tall you go to the immigration office as soon as you get your passport and ask them what to do to get this stamp transferred into your new passport. Don't be a idiot and wait until the 25th of February. This might can cost you a lot of money if they send you back into the city cause every over stay day is 500THB.

1. New passport does not show you inside Thailand so can not be used to exit until it does. You have to have entry stamp transferred by immigration into that passport to use it for exit.

2. Old passport is invalid and current entry stamp must be transferred into a valid passport for exit.

3. Visa has nothing to do with your situation - it was only used for entry into Thailand. The permitted to stay stamp is what requires action.

4. If you had a multi entry visa in your old passport the visa would remain valid but not the passport. In that case you could use both to obtain a new entry. But that is not your situation. To exit Thailand you must have a current permitted to stay stamp in your valid passport for them to allow you to leave. This might be transferred at exit location but they could tell you to return to Bangkok to have it done. You should do immediately after picking up the new passport. Most Embassies provide instructions and a letter of introduction asking for this service to be performed for you.

Ok Understand. The reason I asked this question was because I was told that I could have it done at the border. However, I will do it in bangkok just in case. Thanks
