Dancing

Recommended Posts

Let's face it - dancing is for ladies and exhibitionists - or both.

We have all danced or tried to dance and why do we do it? ...Why do us men do it unless we are steaming drunk or trying to get laid?

Have you ever sat near a dancefloor watching people moving their body to music and actualy analyzed this behaviour for the ridiculous riual that it actually is?

I have, I can tell you now... And I feel like a voyer from another species.

I have tried dancing and am not sure what sort of expression I am supposed to have on my face.

My late mother, God rest her alcoholic soul, was a very good dancer indeed - she even got on the telly and met Terry Wogan in her dancing/Miss Shanklin days, so I have probably inherited the genes to be a good dancer if I wanted, but I have only done it if I have been drunk and have wanted to make a girl wet herself laughing so that she would like me more than the self centered prick who's taking it al too seriously and is checking himself out in the mirror.

Why do those of African descent feel the need to grab a girl from behind and thrust their groin into the girls bottom with a big grin on their face.

Thai men only dance when they are so shitfaced they can barely walk, and they all seem to hide their head when they do it unless dancing with others - they don't liuke to dance alone, the Thai's.

Why they do it is beyond me, there are more constructive ways to have fun and their purpose is not to woo a laydee as it is ours.

Just my 5 bahts worth.

I’m going to address this query seriously.

My mother was (is) also a very good and enthusiastic dancer – she’s 80 now and still does a “twist” every day.

The genes are present in me so I have always enjoyed a turn on the dance floor. Although my attraction to dancing is perhaps better summed up in a quote from “The Commitments, “Soul is the rhythm of SEX”.

But there is another element of dance that fascinates me. It is a medium of expression and communication that transcends the verbal and literary. In Katzanzakis’ “Zorba the Greek”, the author, an intellectual, is writing in his journal describing his psychological and philosophical reactions to the sunset. Suddenly Zorba, his illiterate helper, stands up and dances the sunset. The main character notes in his diary, that Zorba expressed and communicated more than he could ever achieve in his humble scribbling.

On a more personal level, I have seen how dance can transform the mentally handicapped. There is an Australian film showing a group of handicapped reacting, absorbing and creating as a result of hearing Keith Jarrett’s “nud_e Ants” album. The resulting dance was electric in its subtlety and diversity.

My Thai niece, who has Down’s syndrome, enters a completely different world when she dances – either to Thai or disco music – it is as though for the first time she is able to understand herself and communicate these feeling to us the watchers.

So in conclusion it seems you must to be sex mad, illiterate and mentally handicapped to enjoy dancing.

I find that after about five lagers these qualities are present in abundance.

I used to be a semi prof. dancer in my youth & when it's put to a routine it looks better than the average pissed up guy or gal on the dancefloor but a lot less enjoyable as it looses the "letting go" element.

Dancing is a personal take on the music being played at that time & whether it is the "fling your arms around & jump up & down" style or "hands clamped to the sides, shuffling the feet from side to side" it's that personals idea of letting go that appeals to the masses (esp. when a few drinks have been consumed, it really brings out the fred & ginger inmost people & seems to me to be an extension of a good night out)

I love to see people dance, esp. if they don't care how stupid they look :o I envy them their ability to just dance without fear of ridicule as I can't do it (yet), so, like you, sit by the sidelines wondering what goes throught heir heads while they are doing the funky chicken :D

I love dancing. It is good fun. I do my best, but let me say when you are with the right person you kind of zone out all others people and you just shuffle away. I've been out on the dance floor with my lady and been the only one. Didn't give a F*&k!

Dancing is like flying with your soul, on the beats of rhythm. Your life pulse becomes one with the drum. I don't know which is better - dancing or sex. But, like sex, you can't really fake this feeling so the music has to be good :o

The best dancers don't care how they look because it is more about feeling the music. Even if they aren't technically very good, they are a helluva lot more fun than those that sit there and judge.

and where does line dancing fit into this? or the macarena AKA line dancing for discos?

I usually only dance when quite drunk as too many people stare when I do my eclectic washing machine.

I feel sorry for anyone that cant relax or feels too self concoius to simply let go and grove to music.. I have always been happy to get out and shake it, over time practice generally gets you better at it..

I also used to do some pro work for house parties etc.. Routine stuff loks good but as stated looses the fun aspect of simply letting your body take over..

I am of course referring to mainly disco dancing, and I think it was at it's most rediculous in the late 50's, when suddenly it was 'hip' and 'with it' to do the Twist and the Mash Potato.

Was it Chubby Checker who sang 'Do You Love Me Now That I Can Dance'?

In the song he is telling his love that he can do all of the above... Is that what did it for women in those days?

So in conclusion it seems you must to be sex mad, illiterate and mentally handicapped to enjoy dancing.

I'm finding it more and more difficult to dislike our Tom. :o

hmmmm - not sure how this is related to Thailand....

Perhaps this forum should be renamed the inane Scamp thread forum....

Is Scamp beta-testing some kind of drivel generation software ?

Is he getting his 15 minutes right here on ThaiVisa ?

Scamp - this is a Thailand Forum - if you are going to post all the time - can you at least keep it relevant ?

I thought this was Thailand Forum - Farang Pub - fun, entertainment and Expat life, but then maybe you don't dance, as well as having difficulty with your reading?

It is an unfortunate fact of life that most wall flowers start whinging instead of joining in and trying to amuse us all.

So Lighten up, shake those hips, swing those arms, skip the light fandango, who knows you might score a good-looking one this time.

I LOVE dancing, not as much as I used to but I have always had a lot of fun doing it.

I grew up in the period when Reggae music was very popular and it was very easy to dance to, you just kept two feet planted to the ground and let the rest of your body go any which way you fancied :o

It was much better than the ballroom dancing lessons that my Mother used to MAKE me go to-hated that.

I dont care if I make fool of myself or look like a fool.

I hope I never stop LOVING DANCING, not as easy these days with me back playing up, but as long as I have to feet I will shuffle them :D

As Fred Astaire said:" Dancing is the vertical representation of a horizontal intention"

I used to get into the music at the soul venues in the 70's, albeit amphetamine fuelled. At these places it was expected that people would dance on their own, getting into the music, almost trance like.

Praise the Lord and pass the bombers!!!(black, black and white or just plain old white ones.........thank you Riker of Loghborough).

Could never think of dancing like I used to now, the body would not take it, but still hear sounds that set the foot tapping, after all these years.

In the words of the song,,,,,If it feels good, do it!!
