I actually use a Canon 450D and my son uses a Nikon 90D, he's got more money than me... :)

I actually think that for a equivalent quality Canon is cheaper than Nikon.

And more choices for lenses.

Just posted 2 pictures taken by my son in Ayuttaya last April with his Nikon D90, so you can compare with the ones taken with the Canon 450D on the same page :D

This discussion is going on for ages already. Both are very good beginners cameras the d70 is out of production but there are other, newer models in the same price range. There are great lenses for both. I use Nikon, have used the d70 before and liked it a lot (still using it as a backup)

The d60 is about 20k the 450d 25k, both with a kit lens.

www.dpreview.com has good reviews on almost all cameras.

Just to toss in a vote... I have always been happy with my Canon cameras. Always thought paying extra for Nikon name. ?? (but maybe can say that about Canon too. Oh well.)

Problem is, you'd better make your mind right from the start.

Once you've got a few lenses, expensive lenses, not really an option to go from one brand to another...

As for me, I`m Nikonist for more than 10 years. And as a teacher in my photoschool, have to answer this very question ofter. So, what can I say:

1. If you have to shoot in harsh conditions - hot/cold, dust, moisture - then Nikon only.

2. If you want more convenient grip for your hand - also Nikon.

3. If your hands are weak (or you are a lady) - Canon body is much lighter

4. Nikon needs more money - body and optic of equal quality will cost more if there will be Nikon label

5. Canon makes more convenient soft (if you need it)

6. Canon system is much more wider

And remember: always compare bodies and lenses in equal quality class.

As concerns your question: both bodies will become equally simple after you get used to one you choose :)

Ok let's compare.

Nikon D90, I do not remember what lens we used... :)

Well I guess it is not fair, different photographers, father and son actually :D

I don't know much about 450D or D70 but they are classified as entry level cropped sensor cameras with short product life cycle so you are unlikely to use it for ten years any which way you choose, therefore it's probably wiser deciding which camp you should go based on their lens line up. That is, to see if they have lenses you want in the right focal length, aperture, other specs, size, weight and the prices you want. I've been using Canon for the past 25 years but personally I don't mind Nikon at all. I'm actually ready and willing to trade all my camera gears to Nikon if not for the lens asset I have that got me locked into using Canon (all Canon "L"). I actually don't mind changing all my lenses to Nikon either but their professional lenses of the focal length I want are often too long and too bulky (if not more pricey too) otherwise not necessarily on par in picture quality for the particular lens I want than the comparable lenses from Canon I have. Part of the reason I haven't switched to Nikon is because Canon service center is near my house and am reasonably content with their service quality thus far (whereas Nikon relies on local distributor for sales and service, although that is not to be automatically assumed as inferior to Canon). I wish the lenses are compatible with each other so I can use my Canon lenses on Nikon body.

Either will take good pictures. Go into a shop and take some time to play with each of them. Which feels the best in your hands? Which has the easiest to use controls for you? Buy the one that feels right. Then read the manual. Then read the manual again. Then go out and take loads of photos.

Good luck!

Three things to consider:

1) How does the camera feels in your hands, the 450 is pretty small.

2) The D70 is already a few years old.

3) Lenses - Nikon is a bit more expensive.

I'd go with the newest model that is the most comfortable, and Nikon has either the D3000 or D5000 that are similar to the Canon 450.

Regardless of your choice, you will be happy...

That would indeed greatly help.

It is a pity you and your son did not make a joint decision on brand,

then you could have shared the more exotic lenses. :)

the canon 450d £500 canon 500d £650,, both are rated the same in what camera UK magazine, any suggestion why there's £150 difference, both come with same lens,

Would not have helped much actually since we live 10,000 km apart from each other... :D

But talking about lenses for both brands, aren't they "adapters" that would allow you to install a Nikon lens on a Canon body? :)

Well it seems there are some :D

But do they work?

Indeed it is another layer in between the camera body and the lens.

But does it really affect the quality of the picture taken?

And to what extent? :)

Why would it effect the IQ?

You lose AF but so what! Are you sure your cameras AF is accurate. I'd be surprised!

The problem with "modern day" snappers is their inability to "focus" - that's why rangefinders will always excel! :)
