Bomb detectors fail test

By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Ahbisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday that the controversial GT200 bomb detectors have been able to detect only four out of 20 explosives in scientific tests conducted by Science Ministry.

The result show that it would be therefore very risky to use the detectors.

"We won't buy any more GT200 bomb detectors as they do not work. It would be very risky to use them as, of the 20 tests conducted, results were achieved with only four, or just 25 per cent," the prime minister said.

The Science Ministry conducted the tests on the devices over the weekend.

The tests were undertaken at the Sirindhorn Science facility within the Thailand Science Park in Pathum Thani. Five rounds of tests were undertaken without problems before noon with another 20 rounds carried out by evening, as required by the testing committee. The test results for all 20 detectors have been stored in a deposit box for later analysis by the committee.

The prime objective of the test was to ascertain the device's efficacy with results reported to the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. The GT200 devices tested were those used by police and military units in the South.

Earlier, senior military ordnance officers and bomb-disposal personnel briefed the Cabinet and insisted that the GT200 was "sufficiently efficient". They said it had detected explosives, weapons and narcotics in 173 out of 236 incidences.

"The success rate is higher than 80 per cent - beyond the minimum efficiency rate required," they said.

Unbelievable, no one responsible, not even one involved being sent to an inactive post.

Another curruption swept under the carpet :D

It's alright, it only tax payers' money :)

Yes ..... obviously this is being "Swept under the carpet." since the PM is telling about it publicly!

edit to correct quote

GT200 Bomb Detector Does Not Work:PM

The phrase 'No Shit Sherlock.' springs to mind.

But, in all seriousness, will people who were convicted on the evidence of the GT200 have their cases reviewed.....or would that be asking too much

I wonder who Sonthi and the CNS are going to point the finger at for this astounding waste of money/fraud?

Perhaps ... at the manufacturer?

Good point.

The manufacturer should be identified and requested to explain themselves, and surely there is a clause in the purchase agreement about performance and compensation for any lack of performance.

And where's the questioning of the local committee who approved the purchase and some details of the data / testing etc., tthey used in their trials. I mention trials because surely there are at least several manufacturers of these devices.

I bet Abhisit didn't enjoy having to stand up there and explain that a wire stuck to a piece of plastic with no electrical components didn't work. Of all the things he has had to do as the army's fall guy, this has to take the biscuit.

I really wonder what will be the fall out about this one. Will a member of the army actually get into trouble for buying this? I just can't see it.

After Surayud losing his house, now the army getting caught in astonishing incompetence (at least, if not more of course), this is turning out to be quite a month of firsts for Thailand. And to all those Thaksin haters out there, I think we can safely say that this type of public disclosure of wrongdoing among the bigger and better of Thai society could never have happened if the whole Thaksin mess hadn't happened.

On every cloud there is a silver lining.

Iraq, Thailand, Mexico, Estonia, Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, Philippines, China, Kenya, Tanzania, Pakistan are among many countries "duped" into purchasing this device in a possible fraudulent manner (currently under investigation in the UK)

Now let's put all the politicians, generals or whoever that were part of this purchase behind bars!!!!!

oh wait...

EDIT: let's not forget Porntip, Director of the Central Institute of Forensic Science (<< how the hel_l did that happen?) who publicly defended GT200 and only made herself look like a fool.

Personally, I'd say she should resign and GTFO.

If these gizmos have been here for several years, most have probably been pilfered and sold across the borders. Post #15 mentions China as having some, doubt they ordered too many with their track record of 'copying, nor honored any agreement to not dismantle. If the tests were run with a recent shipment of these gizmos they may have come from China as this swindle has been ongoing for a few years. It would not surprise me, as the 20% detection rate may demonstrate the Chinese improvement on a multiple of paper boards reputed to be the logic of the system. If not for the real threat to human life, this could be a bed time story for a potential scam scenario. Reminds me of the 2 blocks of wood sent to purchasers of a guaranteed cock roach killer (with instructions of course)

4 out of 20 = 25 % - "mai bhen rai" science! & they want to have nuclear reactors!!!

And that by far is the most scariest thing in the whole statement from Abhisit! Yes, I had the same idea with the nuclear power plants and these guys want to be responsible for the lives of Millions of Thais, what a joke!

Regarding the controversial GT200 bomb detector, Dr Porntip insists that the device will still be used in the deep South even if it is proven ineffective. “I do not feel embarrassed if the bomb detector is proven ineffective. Personally, I have never handled the device myself. But my people have used it and it is accurate every time. Long long time ago, people believed that the Earth is flat and anyone who said otherwise faced execution. Things which are not visible does not necessarily mean they do not exist.

“The devices (GT200) are there and no one has the right to ban their use. I will continue to use it,” she announced apparently unperturbed by the tests which are to be undertaken on the detector.

It seems as of their calculators didn't work either because to me 4 out of 20 is 20% insteaqd of 25%.

Maybe the calculators were from the same manufacturer

No, but he went to the same university as the guy who was convinced to buy the "detectors".

This has to be about as accurate as tossing a coin. The great tragedy is that soldiers lives are involved in this SCAM.

How about some accountability here? To much to ask for SURE! TIT! :)

Tossing a coin would come up right ~10 times (statistically speaking), not 4 times...

How can a box without battery power work? Black magic???
