I am planning my move from California to Pattaya and would like to know if anybody has used a shipping company to send over personal goods. I will have about 3-5 boxes that can be sent by sea. I have done some inquries and everyone seems to ship to Bangkok only. I would like door to door service if possible.I am open to air or sea but I am in no rush to get these boxes. It is just things like clothes, papers, pictures etc...

I like to ship via USPS (United States Postal Service). Just make sure you fill out your US Customs form, and make sure that it is complete and accurate, including a detailed list of all contents, weight and approximate value to replace. It takes about 2 months time for me to ship about 25Kilo boxes using the USPS, to Pattaya.

I believe Airmail will take about 2-3 weeks, sea is around 2 months from the West Coast to Pattaya (I think they stay in BKK for about a month before they bring them down to Pattaya)

A slip is sent to the actual address stating that the parcel has arrived. All you do is go to the Post Office... on Soi Post Office (imagine that) and present your parcel notification slip. That's all it's easy and painless.

Hope this was of some help to you.

This is interesting, but what about Thai customs?

For example, if it is household goods and the value is 3,000 dollars, do you have to pay Thai customs duties, and if so, how does the package ever get out of BKK to Pattaya? I mean I doubt the USPS form indicates what kind of Thai visa you are in Thailand on.

Who the ###### knows. All I know is I pick my packages up (with my Thai Wife) at the post office once the note is submitted to the address. No hassels, nothing whatsoever.

Maybe, the trick is to address it to a Thai individual. I had addressed all of mine to my wife. No Customs hassle whatsoever.

Maybe, the US Customs is so rough to get through that the Thai Customs let them pass without a second thought. Maybe because of the agreementns/relations between Thailand and US are better than that of the UK, and other European Countries.

All I know is that for me and my Wife, we have had no hassles with Thai Customs or anybody.

Thanks for all the help guys. The total weight is probably 150 lbs. The customs part I have no idea about. The value will be very small as it will just be clothes, pictures, small household stuff.

Thanks for that link Peder. You were right on as far as costs go and they also have a link for customs form which you can do online and they put the customs form on the box so it is there when the pkg. arrives.........so it seems

I recently moved to Thailand. I sent via the US Postal Service about 10 boxes by air mail. I addressed them to my Thai GF and wrote on the customs tag: "household effects of returning Thai resident". The cost was about US$4.00 per pound. None of the boxes were touched by Thai customs and all were delivered to an address in Korat. Average transit time from Saipan (a US territory in the Western Pacific) was about five days.

Note that the customs declaration was not false. My GF was returning to Thailand after six years of working abroad so was entitled to duty free return of her personal effects. Since I had a "retirement" visa, I was also entitled to duty free entry of my personal effects.

I am not sure if I will have my retirement visa in place at the time I will ship. How did you go about the customs paperwork....did you use forms supplied by USPS.

Thanks,

Eric

Hi. I've send many boxes to Thailand via Mail, and I've never paid any custom duties. I've always adresses the boxes to myself, and have had no problem so far.

When you get your notice from the postoffice, you might have to go to Banglaung Postoffice to pick up your boxes, You've to bring you passport with you. Nobody will ask you about what kind of visa you've.

If you send boxes by Airfreight, or via a shipping agent, you can expect to pay custom duties depending of the value.
