Hi All,

I will be coming to BKK in July with my wife and 5 yo child.

We want to go to Kanchanaburi and want to know:-

1). How much a bus is - VIP one way? Ekamia/Morchit - other departure point? Airport vacinity?

3). How much a private transfer would be from hotel to Kanchanarburi hotel (approx)?

2). How much a train is and whether there is a 1st class for more comfort? Where from? Length of journey?

We will stay at the Accor hotel adjacent to Swampy airport for 1 night on arrival and then got to Kanchanaburi the next day. We would like to leave after breakfast, check in the hotel, vist the railway in the afternoon. Next day after breakfast, swim at the hotel and then vist the cemetary (try to find my grandfathers grave) and then maybe the museum. Check out and travel to bangkok to catch an evening flight to HK for a few days before returning to BKK and Pattaya/Island for 3 more weeks.

My wife is Thai so language is no barrier although after 10 years in the UK her knowledge of buses/trains and prices is somewhat 'in the past'.

I look forward to your thoughts and assistance/advice.

Kind regards.

Nearest bus to you is Morchit although buses to Kan also run from Southern Bus Station.

I think buses run every half hour or so. Price is about 100 bht, maybe slightly extra for 1st class.

Time is about 2 and a half hours.

Forget the train, 3rd class only and takes up to 5 hours. 2 derailments in the last year if my memory serves me right.

When you get to Kan bus station you can get your own Songtaow to your hotel. Not sure of the price but not extortionate.

Hi 'egg12345',

Welcome to Kan :D

3). How much a private transfer would be from hotel to Kanchanarburi hotel (approx)?

A Limo from the Accor hotel is expensive, so check them out, but for easy and comfort that is the way to go. :)

VIP buses as 'apetley' mentioned is another way, but you need to get into Bangkok proper to catch them at the Southern Bus Station.

Only take the Blue and White 81 bus and not the (Blue, White and Orange) bus as this stops in every village along the way (4 or 5 hours).

Please Visit My Website "Thailand as I see it" for photos of Kan and other places around Thailand.

Sawadee :D

You should be able to get a Bkk cab for a little over 2000 baht. Try and look on the Internet about your grand father's grave as there's more than one cemetary. Best of luck. I hope you find it.

Northern Bus terminal Morchit regular buses 3 hours, vans every 2 or 3 hours from a mall just can't remember the name of the mall right now another poster may recall , maybe Century Plaza 2.5 hours air conditioned $120 Bhat. At BTS exit.

A taxi can be had for 1500. There are minibus services from Victory Monument to Kanchanaburi and from Ratchadadamnoem for 120baht. There is also a minibus that goes to Kan from Suvarnabhumi but I dont know where in the airport it leaves from.

Each of the 3 cemetaries have a grave register so you dont have to look at each individual grave which should make your search easier

Good luck

Hello egg12345,

I'd say forget about buses, vans, trains and songtaows and pay a little extra for a private taxi with air conditioning that 'works'.

You won't have to carry your luggage about, hotel to hotel service and it will be the quickest journey.

I use a reliable taxi driver that has a 7 seater from the airport to Kan and he charges 1,800Baht. PM for details.

I would suggest that on your day of arrival visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. Located next to the main war cementary. The museum is very educational and they have also got all the graves recorded on computer. Hope you find your grandfathers. They will give you a print out of information and a map, if they find a name match. Then if you have any spare time before dark go and see the river kwai bridge.

Your next day take a trip to Hellfire Pass. Many tour operators in town can arrange transport or ask at your hotel.

Enjoy Kanchanaburi

Boycie. :)

Hello

I am also plan to travel from Suvarnabhumi to the River Kwai area and am just wondering if the advice provided here is still current? Does anyone have any idea how simple the drive is from Suvarnabhumi Airport? I have a Thai license but have never driven in Bangkok.

Boycie, I am could be interested in your taxi details, is it ok to pm you?

Cheers

I wouldn't call the drive from Suvarnabhumi to Kanchanaburi "simple", as you basically have to cross over the entire Bangkok metropolis to get there. It's like just getting on the highway on a straight shoot to Pattaya.

A GPS might be very useful, but won't take into account the day and time you are traveling and traffic conditions. A lot of times, I opt to go via Pathumthani / Lat Lum Kaew / Bang Len / Kamphaeng Saen / Phanom Thuan rather than fight the traffic around the Pinklao and Nakorn Pathom on the traditional route (go straight up the 2nd stage expressway past Muang Thong Thani, take the Bang Phun exit towards the West, right at the St. Carlos Hospital intersection, and follow signs the rest of the way).
