So many websites say that your work permit validity is tied to your visa validity, and when you extend or update your visa, you must go extend and update the work permit.

Well, my current visa runs out on March 9 but my work permit is valid through November, so this contradicts what I'm reading all over the web.

I got a non-immigrant O multiple entry visa based on marriage to my Thai wife, then got my work permit in November which was made for 1 year, i.e., expiring in November 2010, which obviously does not even considering my visa expiration date since it's so far past that, and at that time my visa stamp had an expiration date just a couple of months in the future, and November is also well beyond my 1 year multiple entry visa embassy stamp date. My work permit was set to expire exactly 1 year after it was granted, without regard to my visa.

So I guess the rules changed?

I normally come in and out of Thailand at least once every 3 months, sometimes more than once, so I have never bothered to extend my visa, and I've never gone back to Labor to synchronize my work permit to my visa. However, it looks like I will need to exit and reenter only because of my visa, and I'm not sure I should go to immigration for an extension ...

So, am I just oblivious to something, and am I going to have any problem with my work permit? Do I misunderstand something?

I'm happily married to a Thai and that looks permanent now, but I also work and I'm just worried about any glitch in my work permit.

You don't need to synchronize it with your visa/permission to stay.

You have the option of doing a border run and getting a new permission to stay for 90 days or getting a 1 year extension of stay from immigration in Thailand. For the one year extension of stay you will need to show an income of 40,000 a month OR a bank account in your name with 400,000 in it for at least 2 months.
