Just shows what Bamrungrad and Samitivej are really like - they would happily have you die if it was more profitable for them.

My wife recently had a natural birth at Petcharavej Hospital on Petchaburi Road. It is a decent private hospital, not as posh as Bamrungrad etc, but we've been very satisified - not that we are necessarily qualified to judge all aspects of course. Nevertheless, it seemed clear that a caesarian, although no doubt more profitable to them, was only going to be done if deemed necessary - as it should be. Also saw that on the notice board outside the delivery room, they had their quality assurance targets - one of these was caesarian births being less than 30%, i.e. natural birth preferred if possible. Their actual performance on this was apparently 35% casearian births.

Overall, I thought they did a first class job with nice, well organized child birth/care facilities and would certainly recommend them - at least to someone who is Thai or speaks the language very well. If you don't, I'd be a little hesistant. In any case, perhaps you should check out some of the less profit mad hospitals who could handle foreigners well e.g. St Louis, Bangkok Christian, or Camillian (Thonglor).

My experience at bumrungrad (or rather my wife's) was excellent. She did have a C/S but only due to the fact that the little blighter was so big. Up until that point, the doctor was recommending a natural birth.

Speak to Doctor Supimon - SHE is really great & was pro-natural birth.

I would suggest that the midwife/doctor you are seeing needs a change as opposed to the hospital. The new kids centre at Bumungrad looks superb too - had mine in this weekend.

Friends have mentioned that BNH on Convent Road is good - I've visited a few friends wive's there & they were pretty happy.

the thing is I really want it t be natural birth< and be in a pose that I choose for myself ... only Samitivej so far is the place where they practice it...

Ok I am Russian , and I do speak some thai, even good thai but I would feel rather uncomfortable if I have to think about it during my labor !

In russia we have small private hospitals with hi tech appliances and very kind staff, bt I live here for 13 years and I really not used to the cold back home and my delivery is due in December.... last time I was there in December it was -37C !!!!!!!

in the hospital i am not looking for best price, just very nice doctor who will help me through it.

You must remember that doctors at Bamrungrad are like Gods. You can't inconvenience them by calling them out in the middle of the night or when they are on the golf course :D

Try one of the very good govt. hospitals.

My wife liked the one at Victory Monument - Ratchawithi, and also the one mentioned before on Petburi.

My wife gave bith at Bamrungrad. Caesarian, they said it was necessary, lying bas!ards. Stuck the baby in the ICU for 5 days as they had a spare incubator - lying bas!ards, there was nothing wrong with her. Better to be safe and pay a fortune to us :o What can you say in that situation? I found out later that I was ripped off.

I know for sure that Bamrungrad is not the place... I used to go there and once for a small procedure that costs in Russia a mere 300 US they requested 2000 !!!!! wow! that was the end of it ...

I don't really want to go to Gov. hospital as I don't feel comfy surrounded only by thai speakers....

I just want to know maybe there is a small like pivet clinics that are friendly and home like....

In Russia I found some like I need but ... weather is just killing me there !!!Anybody can comment on Samitivej ? so far no comments at all...

A friend of mine had her baby at Samitivej and could not give them enough praise. She was enduring a long labour and was nearing the end after 14 or so hours. In the end, the doctor told her that she would have 3 more pushes til he could perform a Caesarian. Well, after 5 he finally decided to come out.

My friend was more than happy with the service and level of expertise from all staff there.

Another friend of mine is pregnant at the moment (about 20 weeks). She is going to Samitivej also and is more than happy with their service. Her doctor seems excellent so far and has told her that their goal is to have a natural birth wherever possible.

Good luck!

lazycat: to help yourself, learn as much as u can about natural etc childbirth: look for 'la leche league' in internet (maybe they have somewhere in thailand? we have a group in israel among expats)

make sure your partener/person going with you to give birth also knows what you want, and what to expect (and always expect the unexpected so u wont be disappointed if things dont work out the way u thought, in the end, the fun is holding your child)

i.e. i fought tooth and nail not to get 'shaved and enema' when in israel that was THE PROCEDURE, as was no walking around, etc. and i refused to lay on my back in bed while having back labour pains believe me... i drove the docs crazy and we dont have private medical u get whoever is on duty at the moment, doc plus midwife.

also, fought not to get epidural, drip, etc... but did instruct my partner to agree to things if i was so tired i couldnt think straight anymore.... dont know if they let partners in to births in thailand but some hospitals in israel dont due to 1. docs control everything, 2. religious reasons, but can have woman in with u

if you're allowed more than one person in the delivery room (if allowed at all) than maybe u can have thai woman friend in also if worried about language although i found that i gave birth in hebrew even when i wasnt fluent and was very tired (we work up to day we give birth) it didnt seem to matter

i had to fight to have baby next to me in 'lying in' time, so i could breast feed and not have baby get bottled milk, etc... what helped me was that i came to each birht, and each in different hospital and one with preg. problems also, with knowlege and confidence in myself and i also didnt have support of community!! for all natural birth etc i even had one doctor tell me i would be the cause of death of my baby etc... they called me the crazy american!!...

good luck and easy birth!! BTW, what does your partner think?

hi donna,

I have friends who had babies in Samitivej as well as in Bumrungrad and were very happy with the care they received.

They delivered the baby the natural way in both hospitals.

If I well remember prices were similar in both hospitals, about Baht 60,000 for a delivery the natural way.

The only complain they had was that the service was 'too' good. You get nurses checking on you all the time, you're surrounded by doctors during the delivery...

From what I heard, the BNH hospital is also of high standards, quite a few doctors working there also work at the Bumrungrad hospital. Prices are also comparable to the two 'big' ones.

bina !! your story sounds a lot like the stories I have heard from Russian giving births in gov. hospitals< plane horrible...

donna!! NAMES :o please give me names of doctors at Samitivej.... I had one doctor name ( reccomended by a very close friend ) but that doctor is away till 30th of May !

The Phoenix! WOW the price is much higher than the one they have posted at their web site....

My friend has been seeing Dr Wirote Siripatananont and she says she is very happy with him.

I guess it's all personal choice, but she is happy with the service that she is getting and has no complaints.

Good luck!

The price is 'package price', includes the medical visits and check ups during the pregnancy...The delivery only is probably cheaper.

My wife delivered our son at Bumrungrad and it was a natural childbirth. Our doctor was Dr. Dejaphong and he never mentioned C section. My wife brought it up during one of the monthly check ups and his response was that he wants all of his patients to go through natural child birth and a C section as a last minute decision, if necessary...The staff and facilities at Bunrungrad are the best. Oh yes he practiced in Marshal, Texas for many years and is a Dallas Cowboy fan...

this was the question I asked when first time pregnant, I ended up delivering at Bamrungrad paid 52000Bt it seemed to be good with minor dislikes.

Doctor was really nice all the way? only when it was the end of his working time he really decided to rush things I was placed on monitors, and when I was ready to push the baby was sqweezed out of me with help of a nurse ( in some countries it's not legal to rush things buy pressing at the belly , said to have some side effects for the baby ) anyway I was quite happy.. only this time pregnant again and I really want NATURAL not pseudonatural delivery....

He obviously doesn't play golf. Those tee times can be very important.
