BANGKOK: -- An arrest warrant was yesterday approved for Phornwat Thongsomboon, an aide to suspended Army Maj General Khattiya Sawasdipol, over his YouTube video message threatening a civil war and daily bomb attacks in Bangkok.

Min Buri Court agreed with police recommendations that Phornwat's statement was "not a justifiable discussion" and was meant to incite disturbance and rebellion, and intimidation - a combined violation under the Criminal Code's Article 116.

Meanwhile, a team of policemen raided the offices of Thai state-owned telecommunications company CAT Telecom and confiscated chatroom conversation records and a server, which Phornwat used to deliver another video message, this one threatening to blockade The Nation building and ASTV broadcast facility.

The raid on Wednesday by 20 policemen from the Economic and CyberCrime Division (ECOTEC) was aimed at compiling Internet data containing statements of Phornwat, who threatened the blockade, said Pol Lt-General Thangai Prasajaksatru, acting commander of ECOTEC.

He said Pornwat Thongsomboon, widely known as 'K Thong', on February 26 accessed a chat room titled "Voice of Change" and posted a video clip issuing a bomb threat and stating "the civil war has commenced". The video also urged investors to withdraw their investments from the stock market. This clip was later posted on YouTube.

Thangai said the message was intended to damage national security and create social unrest, a violation of the Computer Crime Act. Contents of the confiscated server will be inspected by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology in an attempt to identify the IP address of K Thong and possibly his whereabouts.

Thangai, also commander of the Central Investigation Bureau, said the CIB was discussing with the Metropolitan Police Bureau, which is now investigating the matter, to possibly take over the case from the MPB.

Police said they were ready to provide protection for The Nation Multimedia Group and ASTV or any other members of the media targeted by K Thong and his supporters as threatened in the video message. MPB spokesman Maj-General Piya Uthayo said police intelligence was not aware of imminent blockades but authorities were ready to provide protection upon request from media members.

At the ASTV studio and office of Manager Daily off Phra Arthit Road, security is provided by personal security guards. Nets cover the office buildings against grenade attacks, with police security in outer areas. Naew Na newspaper has employed extra security guards and a large number of barricades with barbed wire. Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban dismissed allegations by Pheu Thai MP Chaowarin Lakthasaksiri that the government had blacklisted leaders of the red-shirt movement, including Buddhist monks known for their support for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Speaking yesterday during an urgent motion in the House, Chawarat said Thaksin's family members, 212 MPs and members of the Pheu Thai Party and 11 senior monks had been blacklisted for constant surveillance by police and internal security agencies.

Suthep said the government had never intimidated any monks. He called on Chaowarin to give him the name of the 11 monks and said he would visit them and explain.

Suthep said police were tracking certain red-shirt leaders, including Arisama Pongruengrong, for his radical demand calling on protestors to burn down government buidings and to take hostage ministers' family members. "It's police duty and a routine task to keep track of such radicals - not at the direct order of the government," he said.

^ Given the timing of this UDD rally - soon after Thaksin's court case - and where Sae Daeng is now, such claims of distance between the reds and Thaksin/Sae Daeng are looking increasingly shallow.

Of course, there'll be loads of red shirts holding banners of Thaksin (no doubt being distributed amongst them on a cart of sorts), with Thaksin calling into the rally. But, of course, they're a completely separate movement now and nothing to do with him.

The red shirts might be idiots for blindly following this man, but doesn't mean they should assume the rest of the country will follow in their flawed rhetoric.

The distancing between UDD leaders and Panlop / Sea Dung is most recent,

and because the military men threaten the red shirt gravy train and ability

to be profiteering leaders with minimal physical risk. They military nutters went too far,

and scared the piss out the UDD bully boys and thus the distancing.

Though the UDD leaders must be quite panties in a twist over how close these two

military operatives are getting to Thaksin at this time....

And yes the IRA / Provo comparison is spot on. Lets hope it's less violent.

I can also see a small parallel between the current FM and Gerry Adams,

in how some can't see him acting differently in one office than he did in a past situation.

Not to be subjective, but Sae Daeng's position within the Red Shirts is stronger than ever if the premise that Thaksin is fundamental to the Red Shirts is accepted.

Sae Daeng is CURRENTLY in Dubai meeting with Thaksin (by an English-language paper here).

That would lend itself to the realistic conclusion that, despite the hollow noise coming from Jatuporn earlier, Sae Daeng is a critical component to the Red Shirts.

Sae Daeng was signing things for FAR more than 15 people (but far less than 1,000,000,000). There were more people at Sanam Luang that day than there were at the courts. You call it a splinter group but when the folks spearheading that group are actually meeting with Thaksin then it tends to look like the militant arm of the same organization to the rest of us.

Look closely at this model Thaksin apologist argument which whitewashes red violence with attacks on the other side that they did the same. Unfortunately most people really do remember the reds attacking Bangkok residents with baseball bats and guns last Songkran. They are probably trying to make up their minds whether to be violent later this month. The decision will not be on principle but whether they can succeed with violence or shift the blame on to their opponents ie 'Govt fails to stop violence'. You get the picture. It also means that the threats by the Aide are OK with Thaksin's apologists. When you are desperate anything goes.

Suspect on inciting unrest surrenders to police

BANGKOK (TNA) -- Pornwat Thongtanaboon, alias, K-Thong, a close associate of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s staunch supporter Maj-Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol, surrendered to Crime Suppression Division (CSD) police Saturday after a warrant for his arrest was issued earlier on charges of using electronic media to incite unrest and threatening the public.

The arrest warrant was issued following the appearance of his video clip uploaded on the YouTube.com website February 26. In the video, he talked about bombings and chaos which might take place in Bangkok--one day before the February 27 bombing incidents at Bangkok Bank branches in the capital and suburban Samut Prakan province.

Escorted to CSD headquarters by Gen. Khattiya, or Seh Deang, Mr Pornwat told journalists before being questioned by investigators that he was holding an astrology programme on that day for about three to four hours but the video-clip which was aired was only 2.04 minutes long.

He claimed that the clip was definitely edited from which he had uploaded and he denied police charges against him. The investigation is still continuing.

During his surrender to the police, investigators searched an army van that had taken Gen Khattiya and Mr Pornwat to the CSD and found seven pistols, 47 cartridges and a knife inside the vehicle.

However, Gen. Khattiya said the weapons and ammunition were legal. (TNA)

Police arrest Youtuber K Thong

BANGKOK: -- Police yesterday arrested a man whose YouTube video had warned of bomb attacks and armed struggle in Bangkok.

Phornwat Thongthanaboon, who is also known as "K Thong", was seated inside a military van that Army expert Maj-General Khattiya Sawasdipol had taken to the Crime Suppression Division to ask about arranging for Phornwat's surrender.

Police had taken out an arrest warrant for Phornwat, a close aide to Khattiya, on charges of causing public disturbance and making a threat to cause widespread fear.

After his arrest, Phornwat denied all the charges, saying he merely made a prediction in his Internet astrology programme. The clip that appeared on YouTube was edited without his knowledge, he claimed.

Khattiya was giving an interview to reporters and was about to leave the CSD compound when CSD deputy commander Colonel Sanit Mahathaworn, backed by commandos, asked to search the van, which carried a military licence plate, while acting on a tip-off that Phornwat was inside.

Phornwat was found sitting on the back row holding a newspaper up to cover his face, along with four pistols and more than 50 bullets and a knife.

Khattiya, who turned grim after his aide's arrest, insisted the guns were registered and that he had to carry firearms because his life was under threat.

Khattiya told police that he had to leave for a flight to Ubon Ratchathani and was about to get into the van with his driver when CSD commandos asked them to return to the investigation room.

Khattiya told reporters that earlier in the day he had caught a man following him from Suvarnabhumi Airport. He said the man confessed that he worked for Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban. Khattiya confiscated the man's mobile phone, two-way radio and driver's licence.

Scary photo of Khattiya in the OP. Looks like a crazed man who's been injesting too much MSG, and probably a hefty amount of fermented sugar drinks as well.

Thailand, like a lot of places, is enthralled by bad boys and girls. The bad girls are in soap operas, the bad boys are out on the streets tossing grenades and engaging in other delinquent behavior. Chuwit became a household name after he hired thugs to destroy an entire city block of downtown Bangkok. Then, in spite of the fact that he owns brothels, he became a successful politician.

Sae Daeng loves to pose with weapons, and he's become a darling of a fringe element of the Red Shirts, who mob him as if he were a rock star whenever he shows up at a little rally.

Is it any surprise that Thaksin also has a following? Not really, in the context of how some people become popular on the political scene in Thailand.
