Does anyone know the what the rules are for customs/import tax if you buy a computer through the internet from a company outside of Thailand and then have the computer sent to your home address. This is for a one off single purchase and is not a business. Any idea on the taxes / import duty etc. that is / might be applicable to such a purchase?

Why would you want to buy a computer abroad, risk damage in transit, doubtful warranty and service, and probably pay import duty when you can buy one here?

Many computers are made in Thailand in Samut Sahkon. Bangkok.They just put different make names on them, My wife use to work in a factory that made them. the factory was owned by the Taiwanese.

You can call them but you will get an answer that may not be the same when you try to release the goods. Just like US IRS, the answer they may give you is not granteed and can be wrong

If I remember correctly duty on computer parts is 3% (on parts and shipping) , then there is VAT of 7% on top of that.

Not worth doing on most things you can get from Pantip but for specialist items it can be worth it.

That's not too bad for a tax. I bring a few things back every time I go home. Much cheaper in the US than here. Especially if you shop around. I just saw a 1TB external hard drive from Western Digital for $84, including tax. Tough to beat...will bring that one here for sure!

Why dont you just buy the hardware,stick in your siutcase and buy a tower when you get here

with the £ down the toilet plus the fact i get the operating system i want included, in english to the spec i want and the vat back at heathrow, buying one in the uk for me is a reasonable financial proposal provided it wont get taxed like mad at chiangmai on my return

Brought in a new laptop for my sister-in-law. It was about 7000 baht cheaper in Canada.
