Hi All,

My father will be coming to spend some significant time with us in Bangkok. He is quite partial to:

(1) Hamlet Cigars - the small type, not much bigger than a cigarette.

(2) Hock wine - the sweet, cheap & cheerful stuff, that's only about 5% alcohol.

Does anyone know of a place where these two items can be bought in bangkok, and if so do you have any idea of approximate costs? He drinks and smokes these two items primarily out of choice, and secondly because they are the most "economical" back in farang land.

Any adivce or comment very much aprpeciated!

Hmm Hamlet, not seen in a Bangkok Shop but have seen and bought at Swampy Airport, however they are old and I mean old, so its not a good smoke, better off sampling the delights out here, good places for the "El Cheapo" cigar is the booze shop near the Dubliner, good variety of cheapo cigars, upstairs at Villa Supermarket same sought of location just other side of the road. Also there is a place near Soi 4, just pass the garage that looks like it sells phara products, however a big selection of cheapo cigars.

Hock wine.........sorry

The best place I know for cigars is the Whiskey shop on Sukhumvit a few doors down from The Dubliner, its called Pacific Liquor I think. I'm not sure about Hamlets, but I often get the small Monte Christos from there. The Monte Christos are about 600 baht a pack (10), but I would have thought that Hamlets would be cheaper.

As for Hock wine, maybe try Bei Otto Deli on Suk 20, they have a range of German beers and wines.

I used to smoke Hamlet but could not find them in BKK. The small chinese chemist at Soi 4 mentioned earlier has " Mehari's" yellow pack at 265 baht for 10 and they are same same as Hamlets as that is what I smoke in BKK. Re wne go through Molly Malone's back door ( In Silom) into carpark, large wine shop located there selling what you are after.

Hope this helps

For "economical" vino calapso, try the following.

Siam Sato, 25 baht per bottle, mix with sprite or 7 up and ice.

Or why not give the old fellow a touch of Ye Olde Siam, and go native, a bottle of 11 tigers, just what the doctor ordered, the breakfast of champions, well not quite, but certainly the pick me up of choice of your local motorcycle taxi driver.

Smokes, never mind any farang cigar rubbish, try the local yaa tang, 10 baht a pouch, best enjoyed rolled in a banana leaf for that touch of authenticity.

The old boy wont know the difference and will endear himself to the locals, the may even consider him to be from baan nork and khon boran.

Enjoy.
