Do You Recognise This Red-faced Macaque Monkey?

Featured Replies

This monkey was spotted today after it had been apparently abandoned amongst the troops of pigtailed macaques near the top of Khao Toe-Sae (Toe-Sae Hill) in north Phuket Town.

Do you recognise it?

Has your local bar, restaurant or neighbour suddenly "lost" such a pet?

The poor creature climbed the tree after it was scared by a group of the local pig-tailed macaques, who are very territorial - they don't even like other families of the same species getting too close.

He/she seemed to settle down and eat some leaves and I managed to tempt him/her to eat some peanuts (at the end of the video - lousy camera work) but the local Kusoldharm Foundation workers couldn't grab him and take him to safety. (I've no idea who called them - I thought they only dealt with humans).

The last I saw of the monkey was when it walked off into the forest being followed by some pigtailed macaques. I hope it survives the night.

Sorry Jetset, cannot help you with the monkey, but I do know of another RED who also seems to have escaped his home turf and is being chased by others... :)

I will get my coat....

Good news: the owner of the monkey was reunited with him today. The owner said his monkey had been stolen and that he had heard it was seen at Khao Toe-Sae.

He managed to find the monkey and take him home.

Aaaah. :)
