:) A perfect example of no control when driving jet skis was evident to all who were on Chaweng beach today. In what can only be described as if you were on the road attempting to drive a motorcycle to Lamai facing backwards and facing certain death, was played out front row of the beach resorts INSIDE the red flags. This Euro idiot was driving his jet ski facing to the rear with his hand on the handle bars behind his back and doing wheelies among swimmers ! Not a sign of any policing as swimmers scattered in panic ! Hello Mr. Mayor ...

:D Agreed and this time do not blame the Thais ! The farangs out of their heads scream around the island on their motor bikes, or Fortuners (with the tailgating plus the finger) and and run riot on jet skis ! Ahhh Bora Bora, Apia or Rarotonga time to move....

I have waged a war against jet skis for years. Originally in Pattaya they were propelled by outboard motors and many people were injured by their propellers. But like the baht buses and tuk-tuks I found that there was always an influential person owning them and nothing could be done. Nothing has changed. Anything that makes money in Thailand is untouchable. People go to the beach to relax and do not want to be intimidated by these monstrosities, they should be banned.

Have we had a fatality yet? Obviously I hope not, but it is surely only a matter of time? :)

When I was in the UK, there was a major story a few years back about a terrible accident in the Carribbean ...... people got sued, tourists got aware, jet skis almost got banned ......

I guess you're thinking of Kirsty MacColl who died off the coast of Mexico. And yes its only a matter of time on Chaweng unfortunately. :D

But we can and should place some of the blame on the Thai's who own and rent out these jet ski's. The thai's who rent them out to the Tourists should look at what the tourists are doing when they are on there jet ski's . If the tourist do not listen and keep on driving them where people are swimming then they should take the jet ski's away from the people who have rented them out. But the thai people who rent them dont really care if a tourist ( farang ) is killed as long as they get there money .

At least one fatality,at Chaweng Noi some years ago. A couple on their honeymoon, skylarking when one of them lost control and drove into the others rib cage sending him/her (can't remember) to the bottom

Don't blame the Thais, blame tourists or vice versa...all total BS. All involved are to blame at times. This is not policed and everyone knows it must be and it won't be. Someone eventually will get killed and the authorities will be culpable. So to a degree are the hotels for not taking greater (if any) measures to ensure the safety of their guests.

Negligence like this is one of the pitfalls of where we live. Such a shame because forthcoming accidents are so avoidable

good to see it's not always the brits who are blamed (on the basis that the 'euro yahoo' in question is from the mainland).

tbh, the majority of idiotic behaviour I've seen in thailand has came from mainland euros but it's usually brits who get the bad name.

its a shame to ban jet skiis and be punished because of something that someone else has done. if they are used propery then they are safe for the drivers and the swimmers and can be allot of fun.

the thais do have the power to lock up people that breach the contracts. they should at least have a proper go at them thai style. it is in therer interest because they might loose there business to the people dangering swimmers

Your posts maybe. But it is a serious issue. There are rules, and most of them regarding jetskis are circumvented. IMO they should all be

banned. They won't of course, because money is the driving force irrespective of any safety considerations.

they should not be banned. or thailand will become like england. small bunch of people us the jet skiis un safely so ban them for everyone. why not just come down ahrd on the people that are using them dangerously. we should be all suffer just because of some idiots. lets face it jet skiis are fun. that why they make business out of them. no need to ban them just come down hard on the people that voilet the rules.

The main problem with this is its not the jetski owners flouting the rules it is the irresponsible tourists. How do you decide which tourists will ride a jetski safely? :)

Certainly more needs to be done to prevent the high rate of motor vehicle accidents on Samui.

I'm not saying ban jetskis just move them off Chaweng and find a safer place for everyone to enjoy their fun.

A few years ago wasn't some Danish teenager involved in a jetski accident injuring or killing a Chinese tourist? I remember reading his passport was taken away until his parents could come up with the court-ordered payout to the Chinese family. Not sure if this happened on Samui or elsewhere in Thailand.

[Edit: here's the thread: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Stranded-Dan...ve-t103419.html. It happened in Cha Am ]
