Tourists warned of violence in holiday paradise Thailand

HONG KONG, April 12, 2010 (AFP) - Asian countries have warned tourists against travel to the Thai capital after the worst political violence in two decades left 21 dead while nations across the world urged citizens to avoid the protests.

South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan issued travel advisories over the weekend warning tourists to stay away from Bangkok as the violence had spilled over into the Khao San Road area favoured by backpackers, causing alarm.

Seventeen civilians including a Japanese cameraman were killed along with four soldiers after the army launched a crackdown on supporters of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra on Saturday following weeks of demonstrations.

The Hong Kong government raised its travel alert over the weekend, advising residents against visiting the city as the security situation continued to deteriorate, and the warning remained in place as of Monday.

Travel agents cancelled tours, although around 1,000 Hong Kong residents not on package tours were estimated to be in the Thai capital as of Friday evening, the government said.

Regular scheduled flights between Hong Kong and Bangkok were unaffected, the city's airport authority said.

Taiwan's foreign ministry urged Taiwanese tourists already in Thailand to stay away from Bangkok, and called on citizens to avoid travelling to the country.

April is the month of Songkran, a water festival that celebrates the Thai new year and usually attracts thousands of tourists to the country.

The Thai Retailers Association estimated on Thursday the protesters' occupation of the main commercial district has caused more than one billion baht (about 31 million dollars) in losses.

The industry has suffered billions of dollars of financial losses in the past few years because of political unrest and foreign visitor arrivals are down 20-30 percent from last year, according to sector officials.

In Seoul, the foreign ministry advised against going to Bangkok, though the country's largest travel agency said most South Koreans head to Thailand's beaches rather than the capital.

Tokyo on Sunday renewed its alert for tourists visiting Thailand "to keep well informed about the local situation" and avoid protest areas.

The government also advised Japanese not to wear red, the symbolic colour of the anti-government protesters, to "avoid unnecessary confusion and misunderstandings".

Japanese department store chain Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings said it had suspended operations at its Bangkok outlet since April 3 due to the protests.

"We don't know when we'll be able to resume operations there," a spokesman said.

The United States, Australia, New Zealand and Britain urged their citizens to take extra care in Bangkok but stopped short of advising against travel there.

"The situation in Thailand remains volatile. British nationals should exercise extreme caution throughout the country, and avoid demonstrations and large gatherings," the British foreign ministry said in a notice posted on its website.

"If violence breaks out again British nationals are advised to remain indoors and to monitor the media and this website.

In updated advice issued Sunday, New Zealand's foreign ministry said New Zealanders should follow news of events in the Thai capital and "be aware of their surroundings at all times".

Advice on the website of the US embassy in Bangkok urged Americans to follow events and warned that demonstrations intended to be peaceful could turn violent.

100 charter flights from China cancelled after violent clashes

BANGKOK: – About 100 charter flights from China to Thailand for this week's Songkran festival, the Thai traditional New Year, have been cancelled as a result of the State of Emergency in Bangkok and nearby provinces and the bloody clashes of Saturday April 10.

Only 10 charter flights remain scheduled during April 10-13, as Chinese travellers are not confident regarding Thailand’s security under the current political circumstances.

According to Thai-Chinese Tourism Alliance Association (TCTA) president Wichit Prakobkosol, some 30 charter flights remained in operation during the timeframe the Thai government invoked the Emergency Decree on April 7. However, the violent clashes between security forces and anti-government protesters on Saturday evening which left 21 people dead and more than 800 injured led to further flight cancellations.

He said the cancellations by the Chinese travellers were because Thailand’s political situation is still unpredictable, and insurance companies have no policies to compensate losses occurring in incidents under a state of emergency.

Mr Wichit said if the stalemate prolonged, it would have an impact on the arrivals of Chinese tourists, which would continue to decrease.

He also urged the government and the protesters from the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) to negotiate for a solution soon, for the private sector was still expecting to continue its tourism businesses with China owing to the likely number of tourists and Chinese affection for Thailand.

If the situation improved and the warning level of travelling to Thailand was reduced from level 4 to 3 or 2, the president said, Chinese tour agents would again be confident to organise more trips to the country.

“We can still take what is going on because we see the potential in Chinese tourists. If the situation is back to normal, they will come back, and the Chinese authorities also understand and support us,” said Mr Wichit

These tourist can't wait for Thailand to sort themselves out. They will change their destination to holiday in Vietnam, or Malaysia, and Thailand will most likely lose them forever.

Them and many more

Pretty sad, Thailand is a beautiful place

Oh well at least those who do still venture

to Thailand will be able to get great deals

on hotels and in country flights

This is the case of a lot of countries. Why to risk anything in a country where the PM is stubborn and bloodthirsty?

It appears Thailand has finally fallen under the weight of it's own corruption and class divide, which has, in turn, devastated the country's major earner, tourism.

Sure, the tourist will return, one day, but how many small businesses will go broke this season?

RIP to those who have died in their fight for change, regardless of what political side you may favour, and a speedy recovery to the injured.

Let's hope Thailand can now create a fair, and equitible, political system of goverment that offers equal opportunity to all citizens, both from the north, and the south.

Great deals , what a laugh, Thai Air just increased their fares by 20% and it is well known that when business is down the hotels increase the room rates to make up for the loss of customers. Nice try to drum up business !!! RIP to the victims of this mess.

And not long ago this thread was posted, I wonder if mr Niranda will get a bonus this year... :):D:D

1.3mn passengers expected at Suvarnabhumi during Songkran

BANGKOK (NNT) -- General Manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport Nirandra Theeranartsin is confident the mass rally will not affect the number of passengers traveling during Songkran Hoildays.

Mr Nirandra said over 1.3 million passengers are expected at Suvarnabhumi Airport from 9-18 April during the festival. Domestic and foreign airlines are asking for more flight visits during the 10 days period. Out of the additional 558 flights, 486 are international and 72 are domestic.

Compared to the same period of last year, the number of passengers is expected to increase by 3.74%. Out of the total, 75%, or about 980,000 passengers are from overseas while the rest are domestic passengers.

Domestic revellers are advised to make their trips to the airport 3-4 hours in advance due to a large number of people during the period.

Thai Air aren't the only domestic airline..

Plus they are often included in international packages cheaply.

It appears that most of the officials in charge of anything here live in castles in the sky and are so far out of touch with reality and believe we all live in LALA land. Its time this place got its act together and came back to reality. The LOS ads worked for a long time and the cash rolled into Thailand. Times change, destinations change, yes Pattaya will still be there for the mongers. That will change too. To bad, it is a lovely country with lovely people, time that the folks in charge to wake up to the fact that the easy money is over now. Thailand is run by fat cats and easy money people who are out of touch with the working Thais. Its a fast trip down from here.

Shocking the way the Thai PM does not want to accede to the mobs in the street. He is only the elected PM and imagine he wants to restore order.

And I thought I'd seen it all... until now.

Walking home from Pat Pong tonight at 12.00 and saw two Thais wearing red shirts sitting outside 7-Eleven,

it was pretty obvious they were worse for wear.

A farang walks past and they chucked some water on him.

Pretty innocent to that point.

The farang said he wasn't looking for any problems - I heard him say it.

And then he spoke Thai saying for everyone to relax.

One of the red shirt wearers then ran up to him and cracked a Singha beer bottle

over the farang's head.

Blood all over the place.

The other then came in and landed a kick in his ribs.

Other Thais / including stall holders who were packing up their wares

jumped in to stop the two red shirt wearers and protect the farang.

Which is what made me realise it wasn't the normal bar dispute.

They helped him off to the police station.

I don't even think the farang hadn't even been in a bar,

he was simply walking down Pat Pong having come in from Silom Road.

I'd say to anyone out there.

BE CAREFUL. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL. MORE THAN USUAL.

It seems that even in tourist areas tensions are very very very high.

I know i am just one guy but i have been to Thailand twice a year for the last 15 years or so, i have no desire to come back this year. I was considering somewhere else with the strong baht and absence of reasonable fares but the last weeks violence has just tipped the scales.

As many Hotel and resort had there investments on a stand still for over 3 years.

Many going to run out of options and going to close soon, there isnt enough income for many big hotels/resorts.

Result off the non investment policy, they will be down graded and loosing even more costumers to neighbouring countrys.

The ones who survive can only do this with profitable prices to catch up with maintenance and investments, so i don't think there will be great deals to make sad enough :D

You are correct. Thailand will not not change, BUT, what has changed, are the countries around Thailand and they are going to pick up tourism from this, BIG TIME. Also, these tourist will see happy, friendly people, not a country full of scams, lies, violence and ridiculous visa and property ownership laws. Thailand is in very, very big trouble. They are seriously looking at going back to a bannana republic while their neighbours grow stronger and stronger.

Although the violence does not help, if it had to happen, take comfort that it was now, during the economy sag. Despite the stabilization in world markets, farang incomes are still hurting. It will get worse in the next year as taxes increase in the west to pay for the deficits and bail outs. Prior to the reds in BKK, Phuket was not bustling and that was in high season. I have repeatedly posted my observations that beach chair occupancy on some of the beaches was running 25% in March. Hardly an indication that times were good. The violence is just one of many of the tourism trade's worries.

I note the comments that some people have observed that EVA's fares have increased. Only partly true. The increase reflects currency changes in the USA and UK. Look at the fares for Canada and Australia. Those fares have not jumped and the special sales are still there. The Euro is sill holding on, no thanks to Greece and others.

I think people are going to be in for a big shock this year as the expected recovery isn't going to be as big as predicted. It can't be as long as the burden of deficit and debt hangs around the shrinking number of taxpayers' necks. China's expansion was driven by exports, but the world just doesn't have the money to support that bloat any longer. Like I said, the violence is nothing compared to the unpleasantness that awaits us all as the bills come due.

Namknagman, geat real, tourism is not the countries major earner, I'd say that tourism is around 6% of the countries GDP, the biggest earner I believe is exports which account for around 2 thirds of Thailands GDP, though I stand to be corrected if someone knows different.

MB1 - open your mind, just a bit. To my knowledge, rice, and electronic components are Thailand's biggest exports, HOWEVER, to my knowledge, TOURISM, is one of, if not the biggest, employment industry in Thailand. That's everyone from a bar girl to a taxi driver. Decreasing tourism means less employment, less cash being injected into the economy etc etc.

My point is, the tourist are just not waiting for the trouble to end and for things to settle down before they come here, they are changing their holiday destinations. They are going elsewhere. Now, if they just happen to have a great time, "elsewhere" guess where they will go next year for their holiday????

Hospitality is fairly labour intensive. Eg. bar girls, waitressess, cooks, cleaners, DJ's, security etc etc. An electronics factory is very mechanised. Eg. robots etc.

You tell me which industry employs the most Thai's.

You get real.

Tourism down in Thailand means big trouble for a lot of Thai's to put food on the table and I don't mean the wealthy landlords or owners, I mean the staff.

Of course Phuket and Pattaya will always be there on the tourism map, but there is significant pain on it's way to the little guy who is just trying to make a living around the tourism indusrty in Thailand.

Not sure if tourism will bounce back as quickly as after yellow shirts seizure of the Airport in 2008 and red shirts riot in 2009. This round is more disastrous than the previous two. Protesters became militants while the government learned nothing from last year's disaster at the ASEAN Summit.

I said and still say Tourism accounts for around 6% of Thailands GDP , as for your question as to which industry employs the most Thai's, well I'd say agriculture/farming around 50% though I'll again stand to be corrected, though the red shirts leaders seem to be employing a good number at this moment in time if the rumours are true about them being paid to protest. :)

There's a lot more to Thailand than tourism, just google "economy of Thailand", google is your freind. :D

Hospitality/service industry, yes is labour intensive but all of the people who work in these kind of jobs jobs do not work in tourism alone, who services all the Thai's, pun intended with ref to bar girls.

Major earner FOR THE PEOPLE - you know, the Thai citizens, remember them???? Not the multinational companies with their wealthy shareholders. Yes, agriculture is a big earner, that's why the Red Shirts want more of the profit pie from their hard labour.

Quoting Namkrangman..

Tourism down in Thailand means big trouble for a lot of Thai's to put food on the table and I don't mean the wealthy landlords or owners, I mean the staff.

Yeah it does for some but not all Thai's as they don't work in the tourist industry, but read the below please...

Now read the OP's post, I think it said that 100 flights had been cancelled due to the protests and that was just Asian flights, so try and put some blame on the red leaders eh. :) There might have been more profit in the pie if they hadnt have protested over Songkran eh.

About 100 charter flights from China to Thailand for this week's Songkran festival, the Thai traditional New Year, have been cancelled as a result of the State of Emergency in Bangkok and nearby provinces and the bloody clashes of Saturday April 10.
