Dialing 911

Featured Replies

Been wondering for a while, and obviously there's no urgency - until there is and I don't have the info! :)

In most of the western world, we've standardized so that if one needs ambulance, police or fire brigade, we simply dial 911 and are immediately connected to the appropriate service. Many even have call displays that show the address of the originating call, and now some cell phones using gps will show the location of the call.

Is there something similar in Thailand? (No, I'm not going to call 911 just to see if there's an answer!)

I can always try 1155 for Tourist Police, but that might work during business hours if someone's in the office and feels like answering the phone. Not appropriate for an emergency of some kind.

Anyway, what is the way of handling an emergency here in Thailand? (Okay, let the jokes begin! :D

But seriously, is there 911 dialling, or something similar here?

Unfortunately not. All the services have their own number and it is never a bad idea to have the emergency number of a nearby hospital for just in case.

911 is not the emergency number in Australia, therefore stupid people have to be educated to dial 000 because they watch too many tv programmes from USA.

Just try dialling 911 in Europe, it doesn't work there either. It's 112 or 999 in the UK

The closest thing in Thailand is "191" which will get you the police department. They can handle most types of emergencies but don't expect the fast response you would get in the US.

Why would you ever want to call the police in Thailand ?

If in trouble they are the last one I would call.

You start to see a pattern where it appears Septics and Thais are educated similarly in a one way street.
