Anyone have any recommendations for a good tailor ?

I've never had a tailored suit so dont know how good a quality they are or what I should be paying.

I like good suit, of course "good" is a little subjective, (normally spend 4 or 500 quid on Boss suit in the UK). How does a Thai tailored suit compare ? It's for by brothers wedding where I'm best man so needs to be decent.

thanks in advance..

If given a choice I would buy a quality off the peg in the west and have it fitted.

Thai tailoring can range from truly awful to adequate.. But by then your generally paying western peg rates..

Peach Tailor in Patong gets mentioned as being a cut above the dross.. Theres a real high end guy in Bangkok if your up there but again, he can run to real money fast. Tho I am told his work is real saville row bespoke quality so thats a few 1000 USD in the west.

Ok thanks - just what I wanted to know. I'll just buy off the peg when I arrive in UK. No need for a suit whilst out here so dont need to take it back with me and have all the aggro fitting if they are at best mediocre. Am in BKK for a couple of days soon before heading back but not long enough to get suit made.

cheers

NIBH (New International Boutique House) or Narry Tailor, both are located in Sukhumvit Soi 11.

Contact person at NIBH are Nick or his brother Amon and at Narry just ask for Mr. Narry.

Most tailors on Sukhumvit (and I guess elsewhere in Bangkok) using the same factory for tailoring, almost none of them tailor in the backyard of the shop. They only supply the fabrics and style and get the suit back delivered to their shops for fitting.

I have done several suits with Amorn Tailors and have always been highly satisfied. Also know a lot of guys from Europe who always get their suits done at Amorns.

They have shops in Kata and Kata Noi and a third one I think in Bang Tao, though not sure about that one

thanks for all the replies, might check that one out in Kata, just unsure of quality of any tailored suits as never had tailored suit before.

Forget a suit made in Thailand, all of them are atrocious. Get a flight to HK or just get one in the U.K.

Can you clarify what makes them atrocious in your opinion? The tailoring or the material? Everyone I know that has gone to my local tailors has been happy with the finished product. For around 5000 baht you can get a fairly decent cashmere/wool mix suit well made and fitted along with a shirt and tie. I seriously think you would struggle to get something similar in the UK for a similar price...in fact it would impossible.

Material is ok, its the tailoring...or the lack of it. Look in any out of the way soi and you will see any Tom, Dick or Somchai with an old singer sewing machine knocking up rubbish for the 'tailors'.. I and all I know that bought in Thailand were dissapointed, stiching always comes apart.Would rather pay a little extra for better quality somewhere else.

I think you/your acquaintances may have just been unlucky ES - I've known quite a few people who've been happy with their suits (including repeat customers). But I take your point that undoubtedly, there'll be some cowboys amongst them (I've heard a few sob stories as well). Good idea for the OP to seek recommendations. The ones that are any good tend to stick around long term - the cowboys tend to not last.

I agree, buy from home as the last thing you need to worry about is if the whistle is going to fit and be of top quality. If you insist on buying said items when you are there, don’t be surprised if the items come complete with a big red nose, outsize shoes and a big ginger wig. If you are going to be caught the once (I have) don’t let it be during such an important time. They know you are only there for a short time, and well..

I am shocked that you are complaining about the Thai suits. In Phuket I always go to Hillfiger Fashion just near the Ban Thai Hotel and next to Pizza company in the lane way.

Never had any issues. Infact are always great and always get compliments when I wear them. Reasonably priced too.

The thing is the quality with european suits is they are engineered not to last, to keep you going back buying more. The jacket always out lasts the trousers, but the trousers always perish, (the ass gets paper thin and then rips and thats the end of them.) I used to get round it by buying two pairs of the trousers at the same time, but you can only do this with standard black and gray, anything slightly different fabric / colour, they only sell in pairs. Of course this is wearing suits every day for work (not the same one). I'm talking about 25,000 BHT Hugo Boss suits, always nice cut and good quality, but as they're lightweight and thin material, they dont last as mentioned. Probably good for about 9 months max worn a couple of times a week.
