I must go to the U.S. Consulate in Chiangmai to renew my U.S. passport. I do NOT want the "expedited" service. I will provide a self addressed stamped envelope with my application for return of the new passprort to me by mail.

What is the average turn around time from the date of my application to the date I receive the new passport?

Will I get to take the old passport with me from the application appointment, or will I have some days with no passport in my possession?

Thanks.

They may require the old passport as identification for issuing the new passport. Are U.S. passports issued from the Embassy in Thailand or will your application be sent to the U.S. for processing. This will obviously have a bearing on the time line. Keep a photocopy of all important pages of your passport.

Seems to me they just look at your current passport to establish U.S. citizenship then hand it back to you. Then, in 3-4 weeks when your new passport arrives, you go to pick it up personally, hand over your old passport so they can cancel it by stamp and punch a few holes, which they then return to you, and pick up your new passport.

Passports - U.S. Consulate General Chiang Mai, Thailand

Please allow 14 days for processing after we receive your passport application. Passports are printed in the United States, and they are then sent to the Consulate. As soon as the passport arrives, we will notify you by e-mail with instructions for pick-up.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I've got a few old passports here, doesn't include the 3-4 lost over the years.

Passports are printed in the U.S. according to their website minimum 14 days time period......

Now you can do the rest of your homework yourself.

Have only used Consulate Bangkok but Chiang Mai should be the same. You visit and submit application/pay and are checked on-line before your passport is returned for legal judgments that would require Consulate to confiscate your passport. If cleared your passport will be returned and you will be told to return to pick up your new passport and have your old one canceled. It should take about 10-14 days are they are all made in the US now.

Thanks Mac, Lopburi! I will plan on traveling to CM twice. Mac, you have a lot of old passports! Gees, if I do the math, it seems that your first car was actually a horse. emoticons.png

I placed the post because I hate calling. No person answers the regular U.S. Consulate phone line. If you want to speak with a human, it is necessary to call the "emergency" line. I figured there was an American (as opposed to Canadian) out there who had recently gone through the process and would have a ready answer. I thought i saw in an earlier post that the Consulate would mail the passport if the applicant provided a self addressed stamped envelope, but I guess I was wrong. I was hoping to avoid the long trip to CM simply to pick up a document. Seems like a tremendous waste of energy in today's technological world.

But on the bright side, it IS an excuse for another motorcycle trip, taking the long way around through the beautiful roads of Nan. What's not to like about that???
