To degree or not to degree

I've noticed that most jobs in Thailand and Asia in general require a degree including IT jobs which typically don't require any form of formal education.  Is there any way around this?  Is this a mandatory requirmement *period*, or are there lots of exceptions made?

afaik it's like formal recruitment years ago elsewhere in the world, where everyone had to have a formal education at the same level of standard.

If only life were simple

Employers think they are getting better value if they employ graduates, and there are many many grads looking for work.  Without formal qualifications how does any  prospective employer know the extent of your knowledge and ability ?

By evaluating your knowledge and experience.

A degree does not mean your gifted or able.  It just means you can follow the curriculum.  I've noticed that many people go through university with their eyes closed, their just following others.  Some employers seem to like this "herd instinct".

Information technology sector is different to other industries.  Technology moves so fast and is so encompassing that practical experience is highly sought after.

Just tell them u have a degree!!!

There can be many 'FAKE' degree certificates bought in Thailand, especially on Koh san road (many english teachers in bkk have bought these!!!).

Basically in Thailand, you are a nobody without a degree.

But remember that the Thai degree is only about the same value as A-levels, or College graduate in the UK and the rest of the west.

For a Thai student to start a Degree course@university in the UK, they first need to have a Degree from Thailand before they will be accepted on the course, because their degree is of little value in the west.

So don't worry about it, just tell them you have one, and if they ask for a certificate, just go to Koh san road, and buy one! (100's of other foreigners in bkk have done the same).
