Eleven Thai protest leaders denied bail

BANGKOK (AFP) -- A Thai court on Tuesday denied bail for 11 Red Shirt protest leaders accused of "terrorism", triggering angry scenes outside the courtroom where hundreds of their supporters were gathered.

The criminal court cited the severity of the charges and the risk of the suspects skipping bail as reasons for its decision to keep them in detention, their lawyer Karom Poltaklang told reporters.

The 11 -- who include the movement's chairman Veera Musikapong -- surrendered to police after the army stormed the Red Shirt's sprawling encampment in the heart of Bangkok on May 19, ending the two-month rally.

If found guilty of terrorism, they could in theory face the death penalty.

Angry supporters tried in vain Tuesday to block the path of a vehicle taking the suspects away to a Bangkok prison, but were pulled away by the police.

"I'm very disappointed. There's no justice anymore. Forget about reconciliation," said one 70-year-old woman.

"We will fight for justice by ourselves," added a 40-year-old food vendor, in tears following the court ruling. "We don't need leaders. We don't want any more people to be arrested," she said. Both women declined to be named.

The 11 leaders were previously being held at a Thai army base outside of the capital under a state of emergency that allowed the authorities to detain them for 30 days without court permission.

Two other Red Shirt leaders, both opposition lawmakers, were granted bail last week.

The anti-government protests, aimed at forcing immediate elections, triggered a series of confrontations between demonstrators and armed troops that left 90 people dead -- mostly civilians -- and nearly 1,900 injured.

After the May 19 crackdown, the leaders asked their thousands of supporters to disperse, but enraged protesters went on a rampage of arson, setting fire to dozens of buildings, including a shopping mall and the stock exchange.

First reply, first for me.

So why bail for those two MP's before. Probably because still under immunity they didn't flee, so less likely to do now. Some of the others may have asked supported to disperse on the 19th, but previously really roused them with 'burn it down'. Reap what you sow. Time for the two MP's will surely come also one of these days.

To correct myself:

"Jatuporn and Karun relied on the legal tactics by making a preemptive move to report themselves before they were charged. Under the Criminal Procedural Code, their remand hearing would take place when the public prosecutors rule to try them.

Even though the DSI tried last week to remand the two, the court ruled in favour of the defence to grant bail because two had already reported themselves."

Pretty funny. In what country in the world would court grant bail to someone on terrorism charges?

It may be an idea to educate those supporters that when someone is charged with terrorism they do not get bail full stop.

What injustice are the talking about?

Now they want reconciliation and all to be forgotten? does not work this way!

For every action there is a reaction!

Is this the mindset  of a thinking person? Not so much a blinkered view but totally blind  IMO.

The 11 are bad people. They are terrorist, that kills or order the killing most of the 89 people. They are arsonist the burn, or order the burning of Bangkok. They are so evil that they use, or order the use of women and children as human shield. The are opportunist that profits billion directly or indirectly from the master overseas. Worst crime of all, they want to turn Thailand into a Red communist state using Marxist teaching.

Believe me, I only finally learn all this truth through CRES and NBT.

I too fell into their trap, but fortunately I convert myself just seconds from their collapse. Quickly I flip my double sided shirt from Red to Yellow. I am now siding with Buddha and the King.

Justice is finally made. Heaven have eyes. I AM SO HAPPY. Please lock them in darkness, and do not let the 11 see daylight anymore.

You don't have to support the Yellows just because you don't like the Reds. Their is a big gap between the two groups that most sane people would fit into.

You can even support the government without supporting the Yellows if you want.

Not on here it isn't. If you offer up criticism of the current government or it's members, or if you show the PAD protests up as being anything other than a bunch of smiling grannies shaking foot clappers, you are labelled a Thaksin stooge/apologist and get tag-teamed by TV's self-appointed vigilante mods.

It happens for the lower grade offenses.

Bail for Terrorism Act offences

173. During our visit to Paddington Green the police indicated that they would often prefer to bail a person who is being detained in respect of a less serious terrorism offence rather than keep them in lengthy pre-charge detention. At present, however, this option is not available as police bail is not available in respect of any Terrorism Act offence.

174. Introducing the possibility of bail for the less serious terrorism offences would enable the police to continue their investigation of the person while at the same time maintaining some control over them through bail conditions.

175. We agree that this seems in principle a very sensible proposal and we recommend that the Government give it serious consideration.

Smoke (and mirrors) behind Bangkok fires

Asia Times Online

June 17, 2010

BANGKOK - The arson attacks launched by anti-government protesters against Bangkok's posh Rajaprasong shopping district, private businesses and state agencies appeared to reflect the 17th-century French dramatist Pierre Corneille's advice that taking only half-hearted revenge is to court disaster.

The fiery assaults in mid-May came in response to the government's crackdown on the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship's (UDD) downtown protest site, where demonstrators had been camped for over a month in a bid to topple Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's government. Those attacks have contributed to government claims that UDD leaders, several currently in detention, were involved in acts of "terrorism".

While UDD leaders have claimed that angry protesters ran amok in reaction to the government's crackdown, where scores were killed leading up to the final May 19 crackdown, information is emerging that shows that several of the attacks were premeditated and not blind vandalism.

More evidence could soon be revealed as the government prepares to name as many as 84 alleged financiers of the "red-shirt" protest movement.

"It stands out very much that on May 19 some buildings were attacked and others were left alone," said an insurance investigator with inside knowledge of the current insurance assessment. "To me that suggests a lot of thinking behind the attacks."

Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra told reporters on June 1 that he believed many of the arson attacks were "premeditated". Sukhumbhand noted that the CentralWorld department store across from the UDD's Rajaprasong protest stage was torched while several other high-end hotels in the area, including the Hyatt Erawan and InterContinental, were left untouched because their owners had political connections to the UDD.

Fascinating, yet lengthy, article continues here:

CRES Release Financial Blacklist of 'Red' Individuals and Companies

UPDATE : 17 June 2010

Eighty-six individuals have been placed on the government's financial blacklist.

A large amount of financial transactions have been made through accounts of individuals and companies, including family members of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and red-shirt leaders.

Many individuals and companies have recently been placed under investigation by the Anti-Money Laundering Office. Many suspicious transactions have been made through people involved in the red-shirt rally.

The Department of Special Investigation plans to summon the individuals implicated in the investigation to clarify the suspicious financial transactions made over the past nine months. The investigation has categorized these individuals into five groups.

The first group is family members and those in fugitive and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's inner ring. Financial transactions valued at more than 31.5 billion baht have been made through accounts owned by these people.

The second group is active and banned politicians associated with Thaksin. They've made financial transactions valued at more than 1.5 billion baht.

The third group is leaders of the red-shirt leaders and guards, who've made approximately 83 million baht in financial transactions.

The fourth group is military and police officials with close ties to Thaksin. According to the report, a total of 1.6 billion baht in transactions have been made under their names.

The last group is companies owned by the corporations of the ousted premier's business empire. Over the last nine months, they've made transactions in excess of 118.9 billion baht.

In the first group, over the last nine months, Thaksin's daughter, Pinthongta Shinawatra, deposited approximately 1 billion baht, but has withdrawn more than 6.6 billion baht. Meanwhile, Thaksin's son, Panthongtae Shinawatra, deposited 16 million baht and has taken out more than 4.2 billion baht from his accounts.

At the same time, prominent politicians from the Opposition Puea Thai Party such as Karun Hosakul and Sudarat Keyuraphan have also made a number of major financial transactions deemed suspicious by the DSI as well.

Investigators pointed out that 10.5 million baht was deposited to accounts of prominent red-shirt leaders Veera Musikapong, and a total of 1.4 million baht was deposited to accounts of Weng Tochirakarn.

A large amount of money has also been wired to accounts of Kwanchai Praipana and Suporn Attawong.

Billions were transferred to Thaksin’s allies during Thailand’s Red Crisis

Large sums of money were also found to have been transferred into and out of accounts held by Puea Thai Party MPs and red shirt protest leaders and supporters over the past nine months revels the Bangkok Post in its latest edition. A DSI source yesterday said investigators traced the financial transactions of 86 individuals and companies on suspicions they funded criminal activities during the red shirt protests.

The inquiry covers the period from September 2009 to May this year.

Thaksin’s family members withdrew large sums from their accounts from April 28, when the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship UDD rally intensified after soldiers fired on protesters on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Some 4.23 billion baht was withdrawn from the bank accounts of Thaksin’s son Panthongtae and 6.63 billion baht from the accounts of his daughter Pinthongta starting from April 28.

About 4.56 billion baht was also withdrawn from the accounts of Thaksin’s brother-in-law, Bannapot Damapong.

About 140 million baht was withdrawn from the accounts of Thaksin’s younger sister, Yingluck, on April 28.

Money has been flowing into and out of the accounts of Puea Thai politicians who represent the home provinces of red shirt protesters since last September.

Most of the money was withdrawn, although some was kept in the accounts.

The accounts of Sermsak Pongpanich, former MP for Khon Kaen, received about 14 million baht and 13 million baht was withdrawn.

It could get very interesting now that the 11 have been sent to the remand prison and taste the real side of Thai justice, when they all start squealing in a bid to lower any potential sentence. Looking at the money issues, it seems a lot more people could be in it up to their necks before long.

Meanwhile Thaksin sits on his chair in Montenegro stroking his white cat watching more James Bond movies. I bet even now on that mountain near his house he is building a large radio disk that opens up in to the mountain with lots of men running round inside in blue coveralls looking at guages and dials and turning knobs on the megatron laser death ray machine and with a tannoy broadcast in the background in a russian accent saying "3 minutes and counting........2 minutes 50 and counting...."
