Govt ready to support media reform

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Prime Minister’s Office Minister Ongart Klampaiboon has voiced readiness of the government to support the media reform process to help achieve reconciliation in the country.

The minister expressed his confidence that the media reform could neither take place nor be successful by the operation of the government alone. He said he would rather see the reform started by the media itself while the government would support needs of media.

Mr Ongart continued to say that the media should present useful information to the society and the nation. He believed that national reconciliation could take place only through cooperation of all citizens.

The minister further stated that the government was ready to listen to opinions from all sectors in helping reform the media. The media, at the same time, must respect and comply with the laws.

Court to rule Jatuporn's bail on June 23

By The Nation

The Criminal Court has scheduled June 23 to rule on the bail of Pheu Thai MP Jatuporn Prompan charged for terrorism following the completion of its hearing on Friday.

The Criminal Court initially scheduled Friday's afternoon to decide whether to revoke the bail of Jatuporn.

In an earlier session Friday morning, the court has already ruled in favour of the Department of Special Investigation to grant the remand Jatuporn charged for terrorism.

Following the ruling, the defence has lodged the bail application. The DSI has opposed the temporary release on the ground that Jatuporn has continued to cause disturbances, such as his involvement in inciting the red shirts to block the transport of the 11 red-shirt leaders to their remand facilities on Wednesday.

Second detention of Jatuporn, Karun endorsed

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Criminal Court has approved the police investigator's request to detain two key anti-government leaders for another 12 days for further investigation.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) on Friday sought the second detention of Puea Thai Party MPs and core figures of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) Jatuporn Prompan and Karun Hosakul on the charge of terrorism. As a consequence, the court sentenced both to 12-day detention during 20 June-1 July 2010.

The DSI also opposed bail for Mr Jatuporn, citing his inappropriate action when he led anti-government supporters to rally at the Criminal Court on Tuesday during the court’s deliberation on the detention of another 11 UDD core figures.

The 11 anti-government leaders recently put in police custody for 12 days for terrorism comprise Mr Veera Musikapong, Mr Nattawut Saikua, Mr Kwanchai Praipana, Mr Wiphuthalaeng Phatthanaphumthai, Mr Yosawarit Chuklom, Mr Nisit Sinthuprai, MD Weng Tochirakarn, Mr Korkaew Pikulthong, Mr Bhumkitti Sukchindathong, Mr Sombat Makthong and Mr Amnat Intarachote.

Progress Seen in Red-shirt Leader Murder Case

Police have not yet ruled out any possible motives behind the assassination of a red-shirt leader in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Provincial Police Bureau 3 Commissioner Police Lieutenant General Dechawat Ramsomphop spoke today of the progress in the investigation into the assassination of a Nakhon Ratchasima red-shirt leader Saknarin Kongkaeo.

The officer stated that the investigation has moved by leaps and bounds but authorities have not yet been able to rule out motives unrelated to Saknarin's red-shirt ties, including infidelity and personal feuds.

Witness interrogations have only produced a sketch of the assailant's hairstyle but a further quest for information has been kept up.

Thongtherm Rattana, Saknarin's 61-year-old grandmother has denied claims that his murder was prompted by his acceptance of illegal funds, saying that he had never possessed unexplained wealth.

In a related development, police are continuing the search for two red-shirt members in Si Sa Ket province. Punya Bergban, 23, and Jumroon Pradit went missing after military operations to disperse protesters took place on May 19.

Punya's parents, Somrej and Sombun, said their son went missing after serving as a guard for the red-shirt protests in Bangkok. Their last contact with him was on May 12.

In an unexpected twist, however, the discovery of a Si Sa Ket resident named Jumroon Pradit has led police to a man who claimed he had never participated in the red-shirt rallies and had never gone missing. Authorities found Jumroon at his registered home with his family.
