I've just sold my last bottle of Beer Lao: Asia's finest Lager tonight and none of my suppliers have any more stock. My conspiracy theory is that a couple of very rich gentlemen who own certain very large breweries, have had a little word in the shell-like of certain less wealthy customs officialson the Thai/Lao border and a joint and very profitable decision was taken to hold up Beer Lao supplies until after the World Cup, thus ensuring a free ride for certain locally produced beers. Does anyone have a less conspiracy based theory explaining the absence of this fine liquor, or have I hit the mark?

Quick trip to the golden triangle and take the boat to Lao. YOu can buy as much as you like. The visa run buses to Mai Sai will also bring it back if you pay a little extra. They buy it for about 40 baht a small bottle. Not sure what their mark up is.

Not really an option for a commercial operation. Don't you think the Thai Authorities may say something when they see you staggering through the Thai Checkpoint with 20 cases of beer?

Chiang Mai German Brewery's Lager or Weissbier are both much better.

You may be correct but their beer is only available at there pub. I have also heard comments to the contrary.

While decent, I have always found their brew a tad bland for a microbrewery.

I thought you were on the Ginger Beer for the foreseeable future!

The Lao dark beer is the closest you can get here to real English ale. Very nice, but being a fit and healthy soul I limit my intake.

One of those small bottles is about 3 gulps. I'm on my 3rd bottle before I can say 'beer laos please'. Then the hangover kicks in.

I love the taste, but simply cannot drink it for the hangover it gives.  :realangry:

Those comments would probably be from backpackers who just returned from Laos who were stinging at how much higher the prices are for microbrewed beers in Thailand are than for run-of-the-mill beers that the Lonely Planet recommended in Laos. Steak dinners are a rip-off too compared to fried rice.

Except of course that Beer Lao Dark is a lager and not an ale.

Yes, but I have a good memory. Water is my regular tipple now, with an occasional Ginger ale, or Tonic Water if I'm out for  a session.  :(

I enjoy Beer Lao, but I also like Heineken, so what do Iknow? :)

You have extreme taste UG from one end of the spectrum to the other which BTW is OK.:D

I haven't been to the German Brewery yet so I don't know if it's good or not. But I just don't get Beer Lao, I think that it's mystique and former unavailability outside of Laos is what has pumped up it's image. I'm quite skeptical that it's adherents could consistently differentiate the normal Beer Lao from other moderately decent mass-market pale lagers in a blind test. And the claim (though not yours), that Beer Lao Dark Lager tastes like a British Ale - that's just makes no sense.
