Open Office Reads Ms Word Doc Files -

Hi Guys

I've just recently installed Linux Mint 9 on my desktop machine in a dual boot configuration with XP. Generally, everything seems to work although I'm still low down on the learning curve right now.

All of my stored data files that were produced under XP are visible in Linux. However, I'm having problems trying to read MS doc files in Open Office. For some doc files, but not all of them, I get an error message when trying to open or move the file: error splicing file: permission denied. Some doc files open or move with no problem and I can see no difference in the file permissions or ownership between the files. I'm mystified - I am the system administrator so surely I should have permission to do whatever I want.

In future I shall be writing new documents in Open Office - tried this already and they save and re-open with no issues - but it would be useful to be able to access my old files from within Linux. I can only imagine that the current problems are being caused by the MS files still being resident on my Windows partition, although this doesn't explain why some files will open in Linux while some will not.

Any suggestions? Please keep it simple as I am a Linux newbie.

Thanks,

DM

I use OIpen Office (latest version under Ubuntu and have had no problems opening any MS Office files. or opening files in MS office that were created with Open Office. Maybe your filoes have become corrupted somehow.

I suggest you boot back in to Windows and reopen some of the files that you are having problems with and try re-saving them. Use a different name just to ensure you can identify the updated files, and try them again in open Office.

Thanks for that - you have indirectly solved my problem. The files that wouldn't open were not corrupted but were resident in a Windows encrypted folder. So, effectively, it was a permissions issue, although this was not obvious from within the Linux environment. I have copied the files out of the encrypted folder to another location on the XP partition and now they open with no problems.

Now, if you know how I can get my UMAX Astra 4100 scanner to work under Linux that would be very useful. There doesn't seem to be any support for it, unfortunately. I managed to get my Canon IP 4200 printer to work very easily as there was a Linux driver available.

Thanks again,

DM

Glad you got tyhe probloem sorted.

Now for the scanner.

First there is some BAD news.

This link and This link both report the scanner as Unsupported by the Xsane driver, BUT the Xsane web page does not seem to be updated very often Currently it is 2 years old.

HOWEVER the 2nd link states that the scanner reports itself as a Primax USB scanner, so a little more Googling leads to this source forge project which is developing drivers for Primax Scanners, so you may try their driver (xsane backend) and hope it works

Good luck.

Plan B - Buy a new scanner from the supported devices list

I reckon that Plan B might be the way to go.

However, I have downloaded the xsane driver from sourceforge but how do I go about installing it? The download file has a tar.gz extension. They were offering a Primax GUI as well so I've also downloaded that.

Thanks for your help,

DM

The tra.gaz is the same as a xip file, so I assume you click on it and then uncompress it. After that you are on your own I am afraid. I am a relative newcomer to Linux although I have been using MS products since the very early days of PCs (pre Windows) If it involves recompiling the source or something I am not the person to help. Sorry

Because I have to have IE6> to see my ISP's gateway I have Virtual box and a windows os running inside.

It also solves any problems like this the scanner can run native.

I run VB on one of the desktops its alway available. OSE may not have USB support but a copy from the VB site is an RPM so click click and install via package manager. My Lexmark scanner and printer are supported now so I only run the OSE version which makes it even simpler. Some have used a cheat code that makes USB work in the OSE version, but I have not used it.
