A friend has asked us if we can get him some Snake Wine ... preferably with some kind of cobra and/or scorpion in the bottle with the booze.

Not exactly our cup of tea but promised we'd try to find some. Have seen tonnes of it in Vietnam and China but not sure if it's sold here too?

If you know where to buy some pls let us know.

Thanks.

I have seen it for sale in Chiang Saen. Have you ever tasted it.:bah:Technically its illegal to sell because there is no tax stamp on it. You should not see it in any bar for that reason as it can mean a fine of 5000 baht, I know that for a fact.

I think I read that it is for sale in Mae Salong.

Yes, it and many of the various medicinal alcoholic drinks, yaa dong, were found at the market in Mae Salong at the end of town just before the road drops down the mountain, by the school yard.

Its a big tourist seller in the markets close to the Lao and Cambodian boarders. I do admit its an interesting looking decanter.

Hi,

Can you tell me where you have seen Snake wine in a market near Lao or Cambodia border ?

Thanks a lot.

Sawasdee Khrup, Khun Min,

Two years ago in November, while driving some visiting friends around northern Thailand, we stopped in Doi Mae Salong, and bought a bottle of some rice-whisky (lao kao ?) or something with a monster centipede (the poisonous kind) that must have been near 11 eleven inches long (while alive) in it. In Thai these are called "tagrub," or "takarp," or something like that. We didn't look to see if they had whiskified snakes on offer :)

That bottle's been sitting here as an "offering" to my 30 inch high or so shaman's magic wooden monkey covered with Pali yan (sacred mantras) complete with a small erect male organ.

Been afraid to even think about what diseases we might be cured of, mental or physical, if we actually opened the bottle and drank some of the contents: perhaps it would cure us of "mortality" itself ?

Said to cure deficiencies in libido and sort of a natural viagra; better not tap that bottle, it could get you in trouble.

Chances are it'd be illegal just from a wildlife protection angle.

Think twice about supporting the mass collection and destruction of wildlife for tourist souveneirs or "medical: superstitious bullshit.

I got a bottle from Vietnam, taste not bad, was emty in no time.

Sawasdee Khrup, Khun Naam1,

I am a little afraid to ask, but were there any "side effects" you can report compared to your drinking a comparable strength (alcohol content) beverage ?

Would it be correct to assume that it was the bottle that was "empty," and not your bowels, or your stomach via retching ?

I still have my long centipede in lao kao, purchased in 2010 in Doi Mae Salong, described on this thread. It still sits in front of my "shamanic" 30 inch high monkey covered in "yan."

I have really wondered what the effects of taking a small amount of it might be, but since I am virtually "allergic" to alcohol in any form, I'm not about to try. Would love to have a chemical analysis done of it, though, if anyone has a toxicology assay lab handy, and is up for that smile.png

I got my Snake wine shipped to US by the Asian snake wine website without problem.

Asian Snake Wine is from Vietnam which is legal and not potentate http://www.asiansnakewine.com/ If you want the real arse kicker you have to get it from Lao and it is not legal.laugh.gif

It seems to be the only one selling online ? From Vietnam ? Because Thailand Unique NEVER has stock of its snake liquor.
