Hi guys

I am planning on purchasing a flight for my g/f. I will use my debit card over the net and put the ticket in her name, forward her the eticket and get her to print.

Could I just check whether there are going to be any problems with her using a ticket I've paid for?

I don't see why there would be.. my friend said that he's paid for tickets for other people on their behalf before with no issues. If there are any problems surely they'd just phone me up?

Many thanks

This depends on the airline, I've heard stories of people denied boarding before as the card holder wasn't travelling. It's not a law though, each airline appears to randomly make up their own set of rules and regulations.

most airlines apply this rule, "Credit card holder must travel on all flight sectors" She might get asked at check-in for the credit card used for the booking, some airlines will offload passengers who cannot provide the card - the only way to get around this is not to book directly with the airline, if you book the ticket with a travel agent / third party they won't ask her to produce the card as the airline won't have details about the card.

I have been requested to show the credit card more times than not.

Also another problem i have came across booking with Emerites , altho they tell me it is Thai law is i cannot pay for a ticket from outside of Thailand that begins its journey from within Thailand. I cannot pay for a ticket for my g/f Bkk-Syd-Bkk and either do a bank transfer or credit card payment if i am in Sydney. I must be physically in BKK. I understand i can use my credit card if i am in BKK. I have only tried Emerites as i have frequent flyers with them but they tell me it is all airlines flying out of Thailand. I have to transfer the funds to her bank account , suffering bank exchange rates and transfer fees and charges and she has to withdraw and pay in cash . Has anybody else had this problem .??

incidently i have used my credit card for air asia flights within Thailand and to Hong Kong .

So am I right in thinking that by booking through a third party eg Expedia or Ebookers, the airline she's flying on will be unable to tell who the cardholder is and will have to let her fly?

Won't the eticket have my billing details on it though?

Many thanks

If you pay by debit card it should be no issue as it becomes a cash transaction, no?

If you pay by credit card, you should check with the airline you intend to have her fly on

Why not just transfer money to her account them have her pay for it from there

Read and inwardly digest OP, certain airlines have certain rules, some airlines demand credit/debit card used for payment at time of booking when checking in at airport, even though payment has been received by airline they still demand the credit/debit card to be produced at time of checkin..is it something to do with big brother watching you.......

An easy thing to do is to read the terms and conditions of each airline to avoid complications... ;)

I agree with the above quote, this area really can be a minefield and not something your girlfriend wants to worry about before her flight.

As an example, this is what Qatar Airlines say about the issue on their website, and I am sure many others have similar rules.

We accept Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club. Please note that we do not accept virtual credit cards since the physical card needs to be presented at check-in for verification.

The card used for payment must be presented at time of check-in or when collecting the tickets. Qatar Airways reserves the right to deny boarding or collect a guarantee payment (in cash or from another card) if the card originally used for the purchase cannot be presented by the cardholder

at check-in or when collecting the tickets.

The bold font is the used on the Qatar website

Thanks everyone for all the advice. Well i'll be going through expedia with my debit card but I will contact the airline before I buy to check whether they need to say the card when checking in.

Right!

Could I please clarifiy that as i will definitely be using a debit card online to pay that there shouldn't be any issue with them wanting the cardholder present as the money will have debited out of my account.

I have found a flight using jet airways through Expedia, have checked their terms and conditions and can't seem to see anything about the cardholder requiring to be present:

http://www.jetairways.com/EN/GB/TermsAndConditions/GeneralTermsandConditions.aspx

I am also happy to scan my debit card front and back, write a letter explaining I'm paying on behalf of her, sign it and send it to her to print out and show them. Does anyone know if this would this be acceptable?

I would be happier going through this than paying transfer fees, bad exchange rate, her having to withdraw £700 worth of baht in cash and take it to a travel agent. Plus I'm just a bit more clued up with sorting out stuff like this so think it would be easier on her.

Thanks again to all you helpful people

I have booked Thai Air flights several times for my partner, even though their conditions say the card holder must travel. I then contact the call centre and they always get me to fax them my credit card, copy of my ID and a form that confirms I allow my credit card to be used for the purchase. They then email a new e-ticket (which has a different booking number). There is a line on the new ticket that states the credit card/ID check has already been completed & partner is okay to travel without showing the credit card. Never had a problem so far, have done it for both domestic and international flights.

Lime I would ring the airline's call centre ahead of time and confirm whether they have any arrangement like this.

Ok well I spoke to Jet Airways and it seems as long as she prints a copy of my debit card with my signature and note authorising it, its fine :)

Thanks all!!!
