That is a hel_l of a surprise. One has to wonder is the James Milner saga a factor in this decision.

Where does he go next? I would say he would have had the Liverpool job if this had occurred 5/6 weeks earlier. He will be well placed to avail of the inevitable sacking as the season unfolds. Manchester City perhaps?

told he wasn't going to see very much of the money when milner moves to city yeah. and apparently lerner is going to sell friedel to fulham over o'neill's head. looks like mancini will be only the second manager out of a job this season then.

When Mancini goes (mid October!!) they'll get someone top grade with CL experience and O'Neil, as good as he is, is not up there.

next england manager. ;)

Yes, and the FA wasting yet more money paying off Capello since they put him on that nice new contract.

thing is though, capello is ten times the manager that o'neill will ever be. england should just appoint terry venables and have done with it.

Who's going to be in the frame now for the Villa job now they know its a selling club?

Obviously Sven will be in the frame (no doubt a life long supporter) maybe Curbishley?

I oubt they would pay Sven's wage demands....Curbishley sounds more likely....but only after they sell half the team.

If you want a manager who will work on a shoestring budget, guarantee Premiership survival every year by finishing 17th,play absolute boring dross and alienate all the fans,then................

Gary Megson's yer man ! laugh.gif

As Stevie says, Bob Bradley is a very good bet. Has just dropped a hint he'd like to manage in europe, knows Randy Lerner, would'nt cost too much and a number of football websites are on to it blah blah blah.

Nice to see the great football merrygoround has started with aplomb.

Was very surprised to read this. Villas loss. As much as he used to manage Celtic. I've always thought he was a very good manager. I thought he would eventually be the ManU manager. But only time will tell. So where to next?

I liked Megson - anyone that swears more than me and can look good while spitting all over himself is ok in my books.

I hope Martin O'Neill is planning to have some time off....well at least until the verdict in the twitchy trial....:whistling:

Even after "twitchygate" is over (and he gets banged up, which won't happen) i'm not so sure O'Neil and Tottenham are a good fit.

American owner... soon to be American Manager.

The Yanks are coming to town thinking they can rule the premiership  I dont think so.

I think yer man is going to find it a lot more difficult than managing Team USA, especially when his team has been raped and ravaged!!

First bet of the football season.... Villa to be relegated 80/1 ;)

Bob Bradley has indicated he could be ready to replace Martin O'Neill at Aston Villa and is eager to manage in Europe.

• Ellis "saddened" by O'Neill's exit • Taylor: Exit down to transfers

Bradley, fresh from leading the United States to the second round at the World Cup finals, is yet to commit his future to the national side.

He has been installed as the Bookies' favourite to replace O'Neill, who quit the club on Monday just five days before the start of the new season. With American Randy Lerner holding the purse strings at Villa Park, Bradley was immediately linked with the vacant post.

The United States face Brazil in an international friendly this week, after which Bradley is expected to sit down and thrash out his future with his contract due to run out in December.

"I have said over and over as well that I am always excited about new and different challenges. Certainly coaching in Europe at some point is something that I would love to do," Bradley said. "At the same time, I also consider it a challenge when you finish one [World Cup] cycle and begin the process of working on another one.

"From the time one World Cup ends, you begin to go through the process of assessing where you are. From the end of the World Cup, I have said the same thing: There would be a period when both sides would assess. I think that's normal.

"I had a few discussions with U.S. Soccer. This fixture date comes at a tricky time and so we agreed it was most important to get on and prepare for this date and then we would have some discussions following this game.

"That's where it stands. Other than that, there are different kinds of speculation on different days, so there is not much to be said until some more discussions take place."

A good bet would be him taking over from mancini at city when he gets the sack for not winning the league by october.

Like i said earlier, mid October the sword comes down on Mancini. IAnd i bet the lifelong Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Villa fan, Sven will be right in the framework....amongst every other manager in the world except SAF.

You're hoping he'll improve them then?

Anyone with half a brain knows that every Club in the UK apart from Chelsea & City are selling Clubs Smokie..;)

O Neill is an incredibly over rated Manager, the Man spent a combined 19m on Nicky Shorey, Marlon Harewood & Nigel Reo Coker, no wonder Lerner won't give him the Milner $$ & rigthly so..

Fingers crossed he ends up at the Pond Life when Henry gets banged up..

Of course Martin O'Neill made mistakes. What Manager hasn't? He has been sucessful at Leicester,Celtic and Villa. That is why he is so highly regarded. I expect as the Management firing begin his name will feature prominently as a replacement.

Yes he did make mistakes & so does everyone else, but his mistakes at Villa ( which was the vas majority of his Signings ) cost a hel_l of a lot of money, a hel_l of a lot..

Adding to the 19m he paid for Reo Coker, Harewood & Shorey, he spent 7.8m on Curtis Davies & 5.5m on Steve Sidwell bringing that little peice of dealing to about 32.3m there for that load of tripe..
