Yellow Shirt protester given suspended jail term for attempted murder of police officers

BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Criminal Court on Monday handed down a suspended two-year jail term for a Yellow Shirt supporter for the attempted murder of police officers, when police were deployed to disperse a protesting crowd blocking Parliament in 2008.

Preecha Tricharoon, 53, joined Yellow Shirt protesters in blockading Parliament on October 7, 2008 during the administration of then prime minister Somchai Wongsawat. The court sentenced him to suspended two years in prison after finding him guilty.

He was charged with the attempted murder of police officers, participating in a political gathering of more than 10 people intending to harm other persons and threatening to use force to harm others and cause unrest.

According to a state prosecutor, Mr Preecha, while participating in the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protest on October 7 at Parliament, intentionally drove his pickup truck aiming to kill five police officers who were on duty at the scene.

After hitting them, he attempted to move the vehicle backwards over the injured officers. While he attempted to murder them, no one was killed. Mr Preecha denied all charges.

After the court considered testimonies of witnesses and evidence from the prosecutor and the defendant, it concluded that Mr Preecha was wounded in the face when riot police fired tear gas to disperse PAD demonstrators surrounding Parliament.

So the defendant drove his vehicle to flee the scene but he did not see the officers standing near his pickup truck and misunderstood that the officers had intended to blind him.

The court ruled that Mr Preecha’s action resulted from anger and attempt to murder the officers and hand down a three-year imprisonment.

However, the sentence was reduced to two-year suspended jail term as the defendant had no criminal record. He is also sentenced a one-year probation, has to report to probation officers and to work for 48 hours in community service.

Meanwhile, the court acquitted him of other charges. (MCOT online news)

Any progress in any of the Red Shirt cases who attacked and injured 200 policemen (attempted murder) well over a year BEFORE the October 2008 incident of the OP?

No point progressing any further, if all they're going to get is suspended sentences.

Double Standards? How insensitive and inane! For anyone tosuggest that the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts receive different treatment fromthe government is an act of terrorism. Yes,the Yellows held an illegal rally in violation of the emergency decree, and thePM spoke at the rally to support the gathering, but that’s completely understandable. Afterall, it was INSD (International Non-Sequitor Day). Any suggestion that the current government favorsits allies illegally is also an act of terrorism. Since both things happen simultaneously, we need a new criminal term—being DIT (DoubleIndemnity Terrorism). Punishment forthis heinous act should be to attend BET (Blind Eye Training)….that way these loose- lipped farang who come here can learn to turntheir eyes to other issues—like, look there!—a garbage picker sold illegal CDs! I am glad to see the current administration iswise about putting the cart before the horse. We should DIT on the next INSD so we can BET on a new CD! And ASAP!

Indeed, the world does move in mysterious ways. I was just hoping that Thailand would get a bit more stable in the next few months, unfortunately decisions like this will only serve to pour fuel back on the fire.

Red shirt Brahman sentenced to 8 months in jail for violating Emergency Decree

Double standards? of course not!!

This one was well hidden in the papers wasn't it.

Spreading blood on the floor, prison.

Running over policeman with a car, suspended sentence.

Don't think BKKP and The Nation got hold of the story yet?

Lets compare

Case 1 pleads guilty gets 8 months and goes straight to jail.

.

Case 2 pleads not guilty gets 3 years suspended and walks because it was his first attempted murder.

Double standards for sure and for all the right reasons!

Reds have double standards too but for all the wrong reasons 55

What on earth do the Reds have to do with the extra judicial killings. These were initiated by Thaksin before the movement even existed and were supported by the forces that initiated (and protected the criminals involved) behind the last coup.

Must be an interesting story as when I try to access it I get rerouted and get "An access to such information has been temporarily ceased

due to the order of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) under the authority of emergency decree B.E 2548 (A.D. 2005)."

The Reds probably have nothing to do with those extra judicial killing (even when a lot of them happened up north). Still about "item 1" on the UDD/Red agenda is 'bring K. Thaksin back'.

Really? no problem here!

Wouldn't be surprised if they did block the story though.

Anyone who thinks its OK to kill people because they have different political opinions have-not got all their marbles.

Lets hope the rest of the yellow shirts don't think the same otherwise Thailand is in for some very turbulent times.

Still working on CAT no problem!

Why would they want to block it anyhow? There is nothing bad in the article apart from the fact that a red shirt gets jailed!

What on earth do the Reds have to do with the extra judicial killings. These were initiated by Thaksin before the movement even existed and were supported by the forces that initiated (and protected the criminals involved) behind the last coup.

Reds r thaksin supporters so they support what he do and therefor have no leg to stand on for complaints about double standards, human rights etc etc.

I'm Stay Chiangmai ; did any of those reds who drag the old man out his car and beat him yo death go to Jail? Or any who is/ been planting bombs / shooting grenades all over town? Police don't take it seriously or do anything, remember them washing away all the evedence on new years bombs before more investergate could happen? Police are part of the problem! Thank goodness army is more power. When an unjust tretorious enemy uses violence then they need to be squashed, gloves off , Finnish it.

Not same but ira should have been / should b squashed; problem is bloody pansy human right <deleted>, some timesin the real world people have to die to end a problem; if you couldnt kill and go to war over differring oppinion on pollitics then the Nazis an japs would b ruling the world right now; making sure you chose the right side is the most important; just being moraly indignant doesn't do anything. Ideally reds and yellows should play by the rules of peacefully democracy but thaksin suspended democracy and reds have totaly crossed the line, so now they need to be put down before any more serious damage done

Police actions are not a measure of justice in this country, never have been and never will. For that matter, neither are the army.

Neither normally leave any witnesses willing to testify in this country.

As to your desire that the people stood up against the Nazis and the other despots of the world but thankfully the Thai army is in power, a little moment of self retrospection might be in order in case the Thai army decides that they would like a good scrap over Phraer Viharn, and then consider the type of country you want Thailand to become.

You might find yourself on the wrong side of the fence between right and wrong when the rest of the world decides. You are likely to have jumped from a frying pan into a fire.
