Rental Car For Driving Test?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Anyone know where i can rent a car in order to take the test for a drivers license? I can see a possible Catch-22 situation here, unless perhaps there's a driving school around somewhere???

Thanks in advance.

Where do you think you are. The UK. This is Thailand friend (TIT). You just go to the test centre (take a Thai speaker with you), press a button when a red or green light flashes, put your hand up when two sticks are opposite one another, pay maybe 200 baht for a Thai inspector to fill in a form for you.( They haven't got around to translating them yet). Wait in line and you're in. One years license this time and a five year license next year. Oh and take some proof of where you live from the Immigration Office in Jomptien and a letter from a doctor stating that you are alive. They will take a photograph while you are there. Get there early else it's a long day. Good luck.

Suggest you do a search on this site. Clearly you need more information.

Firstly, are you converting a foreign license? If so, no driving test.

2nd, if not, the rates 6 months ago were 50b for motorbike and 100b for a car to rent to do the test in BKK. Not sure Pattaya. These are owned by the test center.

I didn't have a western bike one to convert so did it from scratch, it is scary how easy it was !

You posted in Pattaya section and for Pattaya the above info is wrong. I just got my Thai license, the written test was in English so I did not need a Thai with me, my American license had expired over a year ago so I had to take the practical driving test around the test course in back of the building.

I made the mistake of taking my brother's 4 door pickup with camper shell and I advise taking a compact car because you have to parallel park in a relatively small parking space (I made it the first time) and a small car would have made it easier. The written test was translated I think by a Thai or the Thai questions are messed up. Two of the 4 questions I got wrong (you are allowed 5) were "when are you not allowed to drive a car or similar question" Don't remember what answers I put but the correct answer to both was "if you have consumed alcohol". So it made it sound like if you had one beer you are not allowed to drive, clearly not true but I think the Thai version was "if you are drunk" but translated wrong.

Good luck

PS at no time did anyone stop me and ask me if I had a license before taking the driving test.

IF you have to perform a driving test and you don't have a car with you, it's possible to rent one on-site.

Most of them are Toyota VIOS - automatic and will cost approx. THB 300 for the 'exam'.

Beware: if you would like to use this service, be early, because they only take 30 candidates per day.

Looks like a good business to have for a Vios, rent it out 30 time a day for 300 baht a time (9,000 baht \ day approx 200,000 baht \ month)

Forgot to mention that they have about 5 or 6 cars available; so far for the Pope's pension-planning.
