Tesco bids for Carrefour's S.E. Asian stores

SINGAPORE (AFP) – British and Japanese retail giants along with local operators are in an auction battle to take over the Southeast Asian business of French supermarket chain Carrefour, reports said Thursday.

Tesco is among more than 10 bidders for Carrefour's assets in the region, which total 61 stores in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, the Financial Times said.

Singapore-based retail group Dairy Farm and French retailer Casino are also in the bidding, but US titan Wal-Mart has not entered the race.

I hope Tesco take them over and ditch the Lotus part of the company, if the Tesco stores in Thailand resembled the stores in England itd be a giant leap forward.

But surely there is a monopolies commission to stop this kind of takeover, is there not?

It would behoove Thailand to have a competitor not another Tesco. Service is already lax but stores generally good but it will drop if they don't need to compete. Giants with deep pockets and the battle of the (bank) bulge - interesting.

The lotus part only exists on the billboard.The thai shops are for years already 100% owned by Tesco.

The Carrefour in my area of Bangkok seems pretty packed everytime I visit it. Would hope they are making a good profit with all the customers. Wonder what the real reasons are for getting out of SE Asia? Shame to see them leave as we definitely don't need Lotus to take over the Carrefour stores. I prefer Carrefour to Lotus due to a better/wider selection of products.

LOL, of course Walmart wont enter the bidding. They're not stupid. They wont invest to have a warehouse size store that carries 6 brands of beer, 2 aisles of cooking oil, a rice aisle and not much else

The Lotus in Uttaradit is bloody useless,cant find anything Mom n Pop dont have food wise.

There was an item on BBCWorld a couple of days ago - looks like they want to concentrate on China.

Carrefour will be sadly missed...

All other supermarkets don't cut it imo.

In Thailand as a whole maybe, but in Chiang Mai we have a wonderful set of supermarkets known as Rimping which makes Carrefour look like an overgrown mom 'n pop store. Among the generic biggies though - including Tesco and Big C - it is the best.

As for a Tesco takeover of Carrefour, I would agree with other users that there should definately be competition rather than just them. On the other hand, though, in my impression Tesco does run a really good store here.

Sounds like 2-weeks old news to me...

Back then PTT was said to be a candidate in buying over the branches. And yes Carrefour seems very busy being very successful in China

It seems they plan to sell separately their branches in Thailand from the ones in Mal/Sing.

PS: Casino Group is actually a majority shareholder in Big C.

Before I get any grief, I clicked on the news item because it came up ..Latest news...Carrefour Getting Out Of SE Asia

I never knew, i cant understand why theyre so f'en useless then .. is it huge import taxes on food products, lack of food producers in the area or just Thais like eating only a few different things.

As much as some like to slate Tesco, in the UK theyre a fantastic company, with an amazing choice at prices to suit all budgets and have changed the market completely over the last 15 years.

Tesco Lotus, Big C and Carrefour are so similar youd be forgiven for thinking theyre a cartel and have no interest in competition.

They are leaving because no Thai person can pronounce Carrefour.

Does anyone know the date when they are leaving? Want to cash in my points before then. Also hopeful they may have a big sale to get rid of stock. Wouldn't want to miss that.

I was thinking of a new line of stores called 24/7 to compete both with 7/11 and the larger stores.
