Reported in the Sunday Thai newspaper a Thai wife of a foreigner was shot in the head and killed her 3bt gold necklace was taken. The story says it took place in her house which she and her husband own they also have some other house's on the property for rent on there 5 rai of land. I have heard over the last few months of some disturbing crimes that have take place like a rape of a foreign woman by a taxi driver in Chaweng and a Russian in Santi thani being robbed of 2,500,000bt at his house at gun point. These 2 case's I have no proof but this came from the local Thai gossip.

Sadly, with the local Mafias and hooligans having less tourists to rip off, less building and land scams to do, I suspect that there will be more of this. They are used to having the easy money.

As always in the world, when there is a recession - the criminal elements have to widen their nets.

Maybe time to roll down the shutters and lift up the drawbridge for a while :ermm:

Let us hope that it stops soon.

There are several Thai national newspapers. Thai Rath, Siam Rath, Naew Na, Daily News, Kom Chad Luek, Matichon.

John 1 - you are correct on the case of the girl raped by the taxi driver. This did happen. I know the unfortunate lady in question. It was reported widely - including in the Samui Express.

However, I do not think that it is connected to the general increase of crime and violent robbery on the island. Now there would be some interesting statistics if we could get them from the BIB's

Big C - I stand chastised. If I knew how to remove the comment I would. Whatever. I am obviously wrong to be concerned.

"yes i would like a bridge across a moat that u will digg out with a jcb truck. a bridge that i can pull up and attached to chains"/ they can't even put my electrics in my house properly. thats another story. good morning all .)

I've been up that soi and certainly didn't see any jungle though it is quiet and a bit remote. The police say they found evidence of an unfinished card game and valuables such as laptops were untouched. Pity the poor kids as the father is overseas.

Who exactly is going to stop the crime on Samui?

Condolences to the family. Very tragic.

The young lady who has been killed is the cousin of my sons girlfriend,

The ladys husband is back in Thailand and in suratthani for tuesdays cremation. she leaves behind 3 young children,

Other than she was shot the details are very scetchy at best, there has been no arrest as yet.

From what I have been told by the cousin, the reports in the thai press are inacurate,

My thoughts are with everyone concerned

there is not much crime on samui. No more than any other place. compaired to other jungles in the world. i don't feel like there is an man or gang with M16's or machete's out side my house and walking up and down the streets. yes there is allot of crime but most of the voilence seems to be business or love involved. i mean love triangles. Or gambling. I know it accaionally happens where people are robbed at gun point and houses are burgled. that is all par for the coarse. as the population climbs. so does crime.

bascially most of us should take steps in looking after ourselves. having walled houses. Women be carefull when driving a bike with a long string hand bag. Basically be more aware. Also have your friends look out for each other.

To be honest you are more likely to do yourself an inhury on a motor bike than be a vitctim of a rape or murder and to a lesser extent theft

Sorry Big C. You and I disagree on one of your points above.

Rape and murder - yes, Samui and Thailand in general is very safe for the majority foreigners.

However, I disagree on the robbery and burglary side. I believe that these are increasing. Unfortunately there are no statistics for these cases. Many are not even reported to the police. When I ask victims why they did not report it, the reply is invariably "what's the point?" Favorite items for stealing seem to be lap top computers, phones, i-pods, cash, gold.

I do not know the number of foreigners who live here on the island - I am sure that the number is relatively small, but the % of them that have been robbed/burgled I believe is high, and rising. This is true withing my small circle of friends and associates. I know some people that have been robbed/burgled 2/3 times. Here I am talking about long term people, not tourists.

However, the advice that you give is good. Especially the "Basically be more aware. Also have your friends look out for each other."

i have been burgled 3 times. i hope i have learnt with each time. will find out if or when i get robbed again.

My 2 pence worth is.

1 have a wall all the way round your land / house. that way if anyone is inside and un authorised then you know they have crossed the border which is suspicious because they have had to climb over a fence. they cannot have an excuse and say they were just casually walking past.

2. If your house has allot of glass door and windows. the put steal on the inside or out side. there are some good disiegns,

3. i always have a heavy lock in my bedroom. and a spare mobile phone. If someone does spray something under the door to knock me out then they will still have a problem getting into my room before dawn. Also if i wake up then i have a phone next to me.

4. I you have a fire arm. keep it in your bedroom locked in a draw. if someone is willing to brake in while u r in. then to me that means that they are more than likely tooled up. last thing u want is to be shot with your own gun. on the other hand if u r in your room and u can see there shadows under the door. then u can shoot the door.

5. Motion senser likes rouns the walls.

6. keep all kids safe as robbers might use these as tools to gain the upper hand.

7. CCTVhelps but it is not much of a tool for catching up with them. If u r out u can view your house via the internet then great.

8. if u leave the house for days weeks months. then timer switches mmigt help and send give a copy of the keys to one trusted friend. If not anything they can water plants and make some activity in the house in the day time and take the psot inside.

one big give away is piles of post outside someones hows. means they have been away for a while.

as for what u do if u catch a theif. is up to you. good luck.

u r right it was not in the samui express. what a joke. makes national paper but does not make samui express. they might under staffed but all they have to do is copy the story from one paper to the next and translate it with translate program. how many minutes would it take to do that. News paper. what a joke.
