Tomatillo

Featured Replies

This forum became mostly boring, here's a little action.

For the last couple of years, around this time, my tomato patch gets invaded by wild tomatillos. ( picture )

I am not complaining , they are delicious, just weird, we are in Thailand not Mexico.

Some more pictures from the garden:

Sweet star fruit, excellent orange juice substitute, if you let them fully ripe.

A couple of "small lemons"

Very tasty and sweet, purple flesh, dragon fruit.

Some grapes, the vine is a little beat up from too much rain.

Enjoy and post your pictures.

Nice, Soidog :)

I grew some Golden Berry (Cape Gooseberry) once and initially thought that your Tomatillos were the same. Looking online I see that they are closely related.

That's great to have them self seed like that.

I strive to be half as successful as you are with your gardening

Keep it up

Thank you !

I'm envious of your Starfruit/Carambola.

My tree is probably 5 years old. Full of flowers and fruit.

But they are full of bugs. Haven't eaten one so far.

Do you spray them?

I hope your tree is the sweet kind.

It needs full sun for tasty fruit.

As you probably know, it produces year round; after every round of flowering, when the fruit is olive size, up to about a month before fully ripe; You need to find a way to combat the fruit fly and a couple of other bugs.

Organic remedies for the fruit fly do not really work; I spray my trees regularly stopping when the fruit starts showing a little color.

Until picking time, roughly 5/6 weeks, you will be bug free, plenty of time for the chemicals to dissipate.

Most of the year, for breakfast, we have fresh squeezed star fruit juice form the garden.

Good luck.

I use Cypermethrin, In the dry season monthly is sufficient, if the rain is very heavy, more often.

You will have to experiment and see what works for your area.

If this is your first time, make sure somebody translates for you the recommended mixture for your size spray.

Do not over apply, spray the young fruit only.

Spray downwind, in the early morning, when the weather is calm, wear protective clothing and a mask.

Regards
