Hi. I have a childish fear of injections and needless to say, I have never had any major dental work done, I know I need a few fillings and may get this finally taken care when visiting Bangkok next week. I believe the give you happy Gas, so you could care less about the work being done. can anyone recommend a good dental practice preferably around the Koh San Road area.

They do not routinely administer "laughing gas" nor any other type of general anesthesia for fillings and other routine dental work. Just local anesthetic.

On the plus side, Thai dentists -- most of whim are women -- tend to be quite gentle.

There was a thread here about a year back on general anesthesia for dental work, started by a poster with a similiar phobia, do a search for it. Its bottom line: if you really need to be put under for routine dental work, you'll have to have it done in a hospital and it may take some persuading, but can be done.

Would not be safe in a clinic setting here anyhow. Eemergency preparedness not a strong point.

Forget laughing gas, better that the dentist gives you Valium to take, that has helped me in the past.

I have tried three dentists in Bangkok.

The first two were nothing special, but the third was excellent, I discovered it through other Thai Visa recommendations. (Sorry not near Khao San road)

Dental Hospital,

88/88 Sukhumvit Soi 49.

Dental Hospital

Normally I am paranoid about going to the dentist, valium needed, but this place was different.

No cramped waiting room full of fear, the waiting area here has a large marble pool, five storey tall panoramic glass window, and a coffee and snack bar.

My appointment confirmation e-mail had a full price list attached, along with my first three appointments based on what I said in my e-mail, Each Doctor has a specialist task to perform.:

09:00 - 09:15 - Checkup and panoramic X-ray (Dr 1)

09:30 - 10:00 - Teeth Cleaning (Dr 2)

10:00 - 11:00 - Filling and reconstruction (Dr 3)

Very professional and patient staff, I almost enjoyed my dental visits!

Second the recommendation for Dental Hospital on Soi 49, altho it has gotten a bit pricey of late, the quality is excellent. And ambience, for those for whom that's important, is nice. (I'd personally rather they chucked the ambience and lowered their prices, but for people who suffer anxiety with dental procedures it probably does help!)

I can also endorse the Dental Hospital BKK on Suk 49...For fillings I can strongly recommend Dr. Sirivimol. She only does operative dentistry(fillings) and is very gentle with a great touch. I have had several fillings done by her over the years as well as my son going to her. She charges 1000baht per filling which I think is very fair. She has been schooled in the US and I am sure you will like her.

The thing that is being missed is that for some people injections do not work on some of their teeth.

In this instance then it simply does not matter how skilled or gentle the dentist is !

For me then the key question is, which dental practice gives the best injections?

Or is sedation dentistry available?

Dental hospital thumbs up, met one of the Drs from there she does root canals and was trained at NYU. I think allof the training in the states is the reason for the price increase.

Am not sure of the need for US training as the absolute worst dentistry events in my life were at the hands of US trained dentists. And my Grandfather and two of his sons were dentists (not from them).

My first dentistry experience in Thailand was 39 years ago and completely changed my view. Painless.

Male, female, US non US, Sukhumvit 49 or Bumrungrad; it's all about pain control really!!

As a 'pain sufferer at the dentist' I can well identify with the concerns of those fellow sufferers, and I can tell you most of the posts, while appearing to be concerned, simply provide no answers of merit whatsoever, worse IMHO. If you can't provide an answer best not to post in this instance.

It's a real issue of extreme pain and anxiety for many you see!

And reading most of the posts simply underlines my belief that many people, sometimes many dentists too, simply don't understand the scale of the problem.

Mods too. Sorry Sheryl, you do provide invaluable advice on many issues that I personally have benefited from and thanks for that, but it's a bit more than about a gentle touch, eg, I have one tooth where even the slightest probe with the pick sends me through the roof and an injection does not isolate the nerve.

It may be that there is no advice that can help! I do understand the mods do their best.

Actually no, that is not what the OP described nor what the replies responded to.

You may be confusing your particular problem with his.

My Phobia is not necessarily with pain, it is with needles. I know they don't particularly hurt, its the fear of the object. weather that makes any sense or not I'm not sure. if I am to have an injection form the doctor I simply cannot look, which is fine if i am getting an injection in the backside. even then I have to take deep breaths to calm myself down. I once had to get a local anesthetic in my eyelid and could not keep my eye closed, every time I peeked the doctor was getting closer with the needle. In the end I had to calm down (it was not easy) It was that or loose and eye.

I cant imagine looking at the dentist and needle and all those drills approaching me. maybe a blindfold is needed.

Actually I believe that is normal these days. In Vejthani they always use a cloth with cutout for mouth when in chair. Makes it much more comfortable as you don't have to stare into bright lights either.

Yes OP I suppose the fear of needles is quite reasonable. If it's any consolation I have had about 50 injections perhaps more. The reality is that an injection can never really hurt more that say a hard pinch or a semi painful dragging feeling for a few secs. Some barely hurt at all. But either way it's really not worth the worry.

Perhaps sedatives beforehand would help.
