Advice/Comments On Relocation From Nairobi To Phuket

Hi,

Im currently in Nairobi with the wife and our 1 month old baby boy. I have just finished 2 years consultancy for a major bank across southern africa and im looking for my next opportunity in Singapore or HK. This may take 3 to 6 months though and so i want to relocate as Nairobi is pretty expensive, and fairly dodgy. I dont want to go back to the UK (im a brit, the wife is a zambian) and from 2000 to 2007 i spend a lot of time in SE Asia, australia and south pacific. I really like Thailand, spent most of my time in the south west round Krabi or Lipe. I am thinking of relocating to Phuket in the next few weeks, reasons are;

Better location than Nairobi

Cheaper than Nairobi

Beginning of the good weather (in theory start of November)

I really like Thailand!

In the right timezone/region for interviews and trips to Singapore or HK ( a lot cheaper than flying from Nairobi! )

But, of course i do have some questions and assumptions that i would really appreciate answers to, or comments on (or assumptions challenged!) if you guys can spare the time.....

Is Phuket the best choice? Tough question i know but im looking for somewhere in the south west ideally, wrong time of year for the east coast i think, and Phuket seems the best combination of developed/undeveloped.

Will i be able to find a top notch Pediatrician in Phuket? Im guessing so but want to be sure as the lad needs to be well looked after.

Is it realistic to long term hire a villa with pool for 3 to 6 months? It seems so but perhaps im missing something.....?

I think it would be best to head over and take a hotel for a week or two while we choose somewhere to live - i have seen loads online but guess its best to look in person before agreeing anything, tempting as it is to book some of these places.

When a place lists long term rental minimum as 12 months, is this set in stone or is it possible to give notice in a typical contract?

Im sure i have missed loads of stuff, and any handy tips welcome.

fyi, i make my living as a consultant programme/project manager running IT programmes/projects for banks. I also have a good sideline as a photographer going on, although i admit Africa and Asia make it pretty easy to get great orginial shots.

Cheers

Dan :D

Phuket does make a good choice for that quick 1.5 hour flight to Sin and now there are direct flights to HK also.

You can probably get a 3-6 month rental, but the rate will generally be higher than if you were looking at a 12 month rental, not too mention you're coming when rates tend to go up on rentals.

Have you looked into a visa for your wife and child? That would be the only point which might make things more difficult then being in Sin or HK where you can get longer stays on a visa.

Thais love kids so I'm sure there are some good Pediatricians out there, although we've never used one in paricular, we do go to the same hospital so they have all the records there.

Phuket would be just the ticket for you. Many rentals available now and should be able to fit your needs. Two first-class hospitals and one more very good plus others. Avoid motorbikes and tuk-tuks, riding or renting. Car no problem, can get multi-month small car rental for about 20k baht/month. Yes, get a hotel for the first weeks so you can look around in peace. Rates will vary but a very decent hotel room can be had for about 1000 baht/night and cheaper on weekly; first-class hotel would be about 3k baht/night.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Visas shouldnt be an issue as we have very good thai diplomatic connections here thankfully.

Any areas you recommend for familys to rent?

I guess i want the same as everyone - quiet, safe, near a great beach thats not busy, close to shops. :) Im sure thats what all familys want i suppose!

PS - Steele Pulse are awesome and there a lot of new fans in southern africa since i have been traveling around here for work :)

Well, we arrived late last night, very tired after long journey and a bit damp :)

Today or tomorrow the hunt for a home starts. Anyone with suggestions for where to look for a place (website, agent, news paper, etc) are most welcome as I'm sure there must be some good ideas out there.

Just excited to be back right now!
