Red Eye!

Featured Replies

Just the one. Marked redness in the corner of my left eye. It's a bit watery and sticky at night. No pus, just a bit of sleepy dust. Had it about 3 days and is worsening a little each day. It's still on the mild side though- no shiners or swelling.

Quite a few of the family have had it. And I've recently had a bit of a dry cold which seemed to last for ages. I'm really itchy all over too.

I'm guessing it's viral conjunctivitis, not much can be done, and it may spread to the other eye. I think 4 week time frame.

But is there anything else I should be aware of to rule out anything more serious? Is there a simple test?

PS: my girlfriend has told me not to look her in the eye as it makes her eyes feel watery too, and this is how it is passed! Obvious really!

Confirmed outbreak of "Pink Eye" in Hanoi at the moment.

This one is caused by an adenovirus; usually self limiting within 10 days or so but highly contageous.

Red Eye can also be caused by Herpesvirus, Chlamydia and other bacterial infections so if there is a purulent discharge or any disturbance of vision or pain, an eye specialist should be consulted asap..

Thanks, it seems to clearing up quite quickly, which is a pleasant surprise.
